The juvenile phase for a captive genet begins at the conclusion of weaning, which typically occurs between eight and ten weeks of age, and extends through the adolescent period until the animal approaches sexual maturity around eighteen to twenty-four months. The transition from maternal milk to a fully solid diet is not an abrupt event but rather a gradual process that unfolds over several weeks. By the time a genet kit is separated from its mother or simply stops nursing, it should already be consuming a varied diet of raw meat, whole prey items, insects, and a small amount of fruit. The keeper's responsibility during this transition is to ensure that the juvenile's nutritional intake fully compensates for the loss of the calorie-dense maternal milk that previously supplemented its solid food consumption.
A juvenile genet's diet should be built around whole prey items appropriate to the animal's size. Pinky and fuzzy mice, day-old chicks, and large insects such as dubia roaches, superworms, and gut-loaded crickets form the core of the feeding program. These whole prey items provide not only protein and fat but also essential micronutrients including calcium from bones, taurine from organ meat, and dietary fiber from fur, feathers, and chitin. Feeding exclusively boneless muscle meat is a common mistake that leads to calcium-phosphorus imbalances and eventual metabolic bone disease, a serious and potentially crippling condition in growing viverrids.
The frequency of feeding shifts during the juvenile period. Newly weaned genets between eight and twelve weeks of age should be offered food twice daily, once in the early evening as activity begins and again in the late night or early morning hours. As the animal grows and its digestive capacity increases, the feeding schedule can transition to a single large evening meal by approximately five to six months of age, supplemented with scattered insects or small food items hidden throughout the enclosure to stimulate natural foraging behavior. This shift to once-daily feeding mirrors the adult pattern and prepares the juvenile's metabolism for the schedule it will maintain for the rest of its life.
Fresh water must be available at all times, provided in a heavy ceramic bowl or a wall-mounted bottle to prevent tipping. Some juveniles prefer running water and will drink more readily from a small pet fountain, which also helps maintain water freshness. A small amount of fruit, no more than five to ten percent of the total diet by volume, can be offered as enrichment. Suitable options include banana, mango, fig, and melon, all of which reflect the opportunistic frugivory observed in wild genet populations. Citrus fruits and grapes should be offered sparingly or avoided, as their acidity can cause digestive upset in some individuals.
