An adult genet reaches full physical maturity between eighteen and twenty-four months of age, and the dietary program established during this period will sustain the animal through what can be a remarkably long lifespan of thirteen to twenty years in captivity. The adult genet's diet should reflect its classification as an opportunistic carnivore with omnivorous tendencies, mirroring the ecological niche that wild genets fill as hunters of insects, small vertebrates, and occasional consumers of fruit and plant material. The foundation of the captive diet is whole prey, which provides a nutritionally complete package of muscle meat, organ tissue, bone, skin, and gut contents that no combination of processed foods can fully replicate.
The daily feeding ration for an average adult genet weighing between two and four pounds should consist of approximately two to four ounces of food, adjusted based on the individual's body condition, activity level, and reproductive status. Whole prey items such as adult mice, small rats, day-old chicks, and quail form the dietary centerpiece and should comprise sixty to seventy percent of the total intake. Large insects including dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, and gut-loaded crickets provide variety and enrichment while contributing protein, fat, and chitin. A small proportion of the diet, roughly five to ten percent, can be composed of fresh fruit such as figs, bananas, mangoes, and berries, reflecting the seasonal frugivory observed in wild populations.
Feeding should occur once daily during the early evening hours, timed to coincide with the onset of the genet's natural activity period. Presenting the food in a manner that requires effort to obtain, rather than simply placing it in a bowl, dramatically improves the animal's psychological well-being and physical fitness. Whole prey can be hidden in branches, placed inside puzzle feeders, or scattered across elevated platforms to simulate the search-and-capture behavior that occupies much of a wild genet's nightly activity. This approach to feeding transforms a routine husbandry task into a meaningful enrichment opportunity that engages the animal's predatory instincts and problem-solving abilities.
Nutritional supplementation is generally unnecessary when a diet based on whole prey and varied insects is consistently provided, as these items are nutritionally complete in their natural state. However, if the keeper relies partially on commercial carnivore diets, boneless meat portions, or other processed foods, a calcium supplement dusted onto the food several times per week helps prevent the calcium-phosphorus imbalances that are the most common nutritional disorder in captive viverrids. A multivitamin formulated for carnivores can be offered once or twice weekly as additional insurance. Over-supplementation should be avoided, as excessive vitamin A and vitamin D intake can cause toxicity in carnivorous species that are adapted to obtain these nutrients directly from prey tissues.
