The skin may lose some of its youthful suppleness and develop a slightly rougher texture, particularly along the dorsal surface and the base of the tail. Muscle mass along the trunk and tail base may diminish slowly, giving the animal a somewhat leaner appearance than it carried during its peak years. The external gills, while still functional, may show reduced filament density or mild fraying at the tips that does not resolve with water quality optimization, reflecting the natural decline in tissue regeneration capacity that accompanies aging.
Skeletal changes are among the most clinically significant age-related developments and may include progressive stiffening of the spinal column, reduced flexibility during swimming and turning, and mild distortion of the limb joints that alters the animal's gait on the substrate.
