A fully mature Mudpuppy, Necturus maculosus, is a solidly built, entirely aquatic salamander that typically measures between eight and thirteen inches in total length, though occasional specimens in optimal conditions may slightly exceed this range. The species is the largest salamander in many regions of its native range, which spans from southern Canada through the Great Lakes basin, the upper Mississippi River drainage, and portions of the eastern United States. Sexual maturity marks the functional onset of adulthood and occurs between four and six years of age in captive animals, though the animal continues to add modest incremental length and body mass for several years after reproductive capability is achieved.
The adult body plan is robust and somewhat dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad head, small lidless eyes, and a wide, rounded snout equipped with numerous small teeth used for gripping slippery prey rather than tearing or chewing. The most distinctive external feature remains the three pairs of bushy external gills that project from the sides of the neck. In a healthy adult maintained in well-oxygenated water, these gills are deep maroon to burgundy red, moderately bushy, and held in a relaxed, slightly fanned posture. Gill morphology is dynamic and responds to dissolved oxygen levels: in chronically low-oxygen conditions, the gill filaments become more elaborately branched and are held rigidly erect to maximize surface area, while in highly oxygenated water, the gills may appear somewhat compact and are held closer to the neck.
Adult coloration is variable but generally consists of a dark gray-brown to rusty brown dorsal surface marked with scattered dark blue-black spots or irregular blotches. The ventral surface is lighter, ranging from pale gray to yellowish cream, and may bear faint darker speckling. Color intensity can vary seasonally and in response to substrate color, lighting conditions, and physiological state. Individuals from different geographic populations may show consistent color variants, with specimens from clear-water habitats often displaying darker, more contrasted patterning than those from turbid or silty environments. The skin surface is smooth and coated in a thin, continuously renewed mucus layer that serves antimicrobial, osmoregulatory, and friction-reducing functions.
Sexual dimorphism in adults is subtle but detectable upon close inspection. Males tend to have broader, more spatulate heads and more prominent cloacal papillae, which become swollen during the breeding season. Females are generally slightly larger in overall body length and have a more rounded, fuller body profile, particularly during the months when they are carrying developing eggs. The cloacal region of a gravid female may appear visibly distended as the egg mass matures. These differences are most pronounced during the autumn and winter breeding season and may be difficult to discern during the summer months when reproductive organs are in a quiescent state.
