Physical changes during the juvenile period are continuous but subtle on a week-to-week basis. The head broadens and flattens, the limbs lengthen and thicken, and the body takes on a more cylindrical cross-section as muscle mass increases around the trunk and tail base. The coloration gradually resolves from the somewhat uniform olive or brownish tones of the hatchling into the adult pattern of dark gray-brown or rusty brown with irregularly scattered dark blue-black spots or blotches. The ventral surface lightens to a pale gray or cream, sometimes with faint speckling. The external gills, which are the species' most visually distinctive feature, grow proportionally with the body and develop increasingly complex branching patterns that maximize respiratory surface area as the animal's oxygen demand increases with its mass.
Skeletal ossification advances steadily throughout the juvenile period, transitioning from the largely cartilaginous framework of the hatchling to a progressively more mineralized skeleton. This process depends heavily on adequate dietary calcium and appropriate water chemistry, and deficiencies during this phase produce permanent skeletal deformities including shortened spines, kinked tails, and misaligned jaws that compromise the animal's ability to feed effectively. Monthly length and weight measurements recorded in a husbandry log provide the most reliable long-term growth tracking and allow the keeper to identify growth stalls that may indicate nutritional deficiency, chronic low-grade infection, or suboptimal environmental conditions before they produce visible physical damage.
Sexual dimorphism begins to emerge during the later juvenile period, typically after the second year. Males develop broader, more flattened heads, more prominent cloacal papillae, and slightly heavier forelimb musculature compared to females of the same age and overall body length. These differences are initially subtle and require comparison between individuals to detect reliably.
