The most widely used framework for quality-of-life assessment in veterinary medicine evaluates the animal across several domains including pain, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, and the balance of good days versus bad days. For a Diamondback Terrapin, pain may be inferred from behavioral changes such as sustained withdrawal into the shell, reluctance to move even when stimulated, flinching or pulling away when specific areas of the body are touched, and failure to exhibit previously reliable behaviors such as basking or feeding.
