This extended prime period requires a commitment from the keeper that exceeds what most other commonly kept reptile species demand. The chronic, low-grade effects of suboptimal water quality, inadequate UVB exposure, or a monotonous diet accumulate silently over years and typically manifest as significant health problems only when they have progressed to the point where reversal is difficult or impossible.
