Growth rates vary considerably among individuals and are influenced by feeding frequency, diet quality, temperature management, and genetics. Juveniles that are fed daily with properly supplemented prey and maintained at optimal temperatures will grow noticeably faster than those kept on a less consistent regimen. However, power-feeding to accelerate growth is not recommended, as excessively rapid weight gain can stress developing organs and skeletal structures. A steady, moderate growth trajectory produces a healthier and more robust adult.
The keeled, overlapping dorsal scales that define the Alligator Lizard's distinctive armored appearance become progressively more prominent during the juvenile phase. Coloration also matures during this period. Juvenile Southern Alligator Lizards typically display a broad dorsal stripe with dark crossbands that become more contrasting and well-defined as the animal grows. Northern Alligator Lizards may develop more muted patterns with greenish or bluish ventral coloring becoming apparent. These color shifts are gradual and serve as a reliable visual indicator that the lizard is developing normally.
Shed frequency decreases during the juvenile stage compared to the neonatal period but remains higher than what adults experience. Expect shedding approximately every two to three weeks during active growth phases. Clean, complete sheds that come off in large connected pieces indicate good hydration and proper humidity management. Sheds that come off in small, fragmented patches suggest that environmental humidity needs adjustment or that the lizard may be experiencing subclinical dehydration.
