A fully grown Southern Alligator Lizard typically measures 10 to 13 inches in total length, while Northern Alligator Lizards tend to be slightly smaller, reaching 8 to 11 inches. The long, muscular tail accounts for roughly 60 percent of the total body length and serves as both a fat storage organ and a counterbalance during climbing. A healthy adult tail should be rounded and full without being grossly swollen, which can indicate obesity.
The adult Alligator Lizard's body is covered in distinctive keeled scales arranged in regular rows, giving the animal its characteristic armored appearance that inspired the common name. The lateral fold, a flexible groove of granular scales running along each side of the body between the dorsal and ventral plates, is a defining anatomical feature of the family Anguidae. This fold allows the rigid-looking body to expand during respiration, feeding, and in gravid females, to accommodate developing eggs or embryos. Understanding this anatomy helps keepers distinguish normal body contours from abnormal swelling.
Adult males and females can be distinguished by several physical characteristics once the lizard has fully matured. Males tend to have broader, more triangular heads relative to body size, and their bodies are often somewhat more slender than those of females. In some species, males may display slightly more vivid coloration, particularly on the ventral surface. Females generally have wider, more rounded bodies, particularly through the abdomen. Definitive sex determination can be performed by a veterinarian using cloacal probing or visual inspection of the hemipenal bulges at the tail base.
Body condition scoring in adult Alligator Lizards relies primarily on tail thickness, visibility of skeletal structures, and overall muscle tone. An ideal body condition shows a plump tail that tapers smoothly, no visible ribs or hip bones, and firm musculature along the limbs and dorsum. An underweight lizard will have a thin, angular tail and prominent skeletal outlines. An overweight lizard will have an excessively thick tail, fat deposits visible around the limb insertions, and may show reduced mobility. Both extremes carry health risks and should be corrected through dietary adjustments.
