The Silver Rabbit is a moderately long-lived breed with a typical lifespan of seven to ten years, and the transition into the senior stage generally begins between five and six years of age. This transition is rarely marked by a single dramatic event but rather emerges as a gradual accumulation of subtle changes in activity level, mobility, appetite, and behavior. A keeper who has spent the adult years observing their rabbit's normal habits and patterns is in the best position to detect these early shifts and respond with appropriate adjustments to care.
One of the earliest signs that a Silver Rabbit is entering its senior years is a reduction in overall activity. The energetic sprints, binkies, and sustained exploration sessions that characterized the adult phase may become shorter and less frequent. The rabbit may rest for longer periods between bouts of activity and prefer lower, more accessible resting spots over elevated platforms it once jumped to without hesitation. These changes are the natural result of aging joints, declining muscle mass, and reduced cardiovascular endurance, and they do not necessarily indicate illness.
Changes in the coat may also signal the progression into the senior stage. The dense, silvered pelt that defines the breed may begin to thin slightly, particularly along the spine and hindquarters. The fur may lose some of its luster, appearing drier or less resilient to the touch. Grooming habits may change as well, with the rabbit becoming less thorough in maintaining its hindquarters, a development that can lead to matted fur and soiled areas if the keeper does not assist with regular brushing and spot cleaning.
Weight fluctuations in either direction deserve careful attention as the rabbit ages. Some senior Silver Rabbits lose weight gradually due to declining appetite, dental deterioration, or reduced efficiency in absorbing nutrients from their food. Others gain weight as their activity level decreases while their caloric intake remains unchanged. Either trend should prompt a veterinary evaluation to determine whether an underlying condition is contributing to the change and to guide appropriate dietary adjustments.
