The juvenile stage of the Cobalt Blue Tarantula is marked by dramatic physical transformation. As the spider progresses through successive molts, its leg span increases noticeably with each cycle, eventually reaching three to four inches during the later juvenile instars. Molting frequency slows compared to the spiderling phase but remains relatively regular, typically occurring every six to twelve weeks depending on feeding rates, temperature, and individual metabolism. Each molt reveals a slightly larger, more robust spider with increasingly defined coloration.
This is the stage where the species' signature blue coloration becomes truly prominent. The vivid, metallic blue sheen on the legs deepens with each molt, particularly on the femur and tibia segments. The carapace may develop a darker, richer hue as well. Coloration intensity can vary between individuals and is often most vibrant immediately following a fresh molt, fading slightly as the exoskeleton hardens and ages. Environmental factors such as humidity and diet quality can also influence the richness of the blue tones.
Sexual dimorphism begins to emerge during the later juvenile instars, though definitive sexing is most reliably performed through examination of shed exoskeletons. Experienced keepers can examine the interior of a molt under magnification to identify or rule out the presence of spermathecae, which indicate a female. Males tend to grow slightly faster and may display subtly different body proportions, including longer legs relative to body size, as they approach maturity.
Keepers should expect the overall growth rate to be moderate compared to faster-growing New World species. Cobalt Blues are not among the quickest tarantulas to reach maturity, and patience is essential. Attempting to accelerate growth through overfeeding or elevated temperatures can introduce health risks and should be avoided in favor of steady, consistent care.
