The female should have molted within the past three to six months, ensuring that her spermathecae are empty and receptive. A recently molted female is also less likely to be approaching another pre-molt period, during which she would be unreceptive and potentially more aggressive toward a male.
The male must have completed his terminal molt, which is identifiable by the development of tibial hooks on the front pair of legs and the distinctive bulbous pedipalps used for sperm transfer. After his terminal molt, a mature male will typically construct a sperm web, a small sheet of silk onto which he deposits sperm and then loads into his pedipalps. The presence of a completed sperm web confirms that the male is physiologically ready to mate. Males in this stage often become restless, pacing their enclosure and drumming on surfaces, behaviors driven by the instinct to locate a female.
Conditioning the female involves ensuring she is well-fed and in robust body condition, with a plump abdomen indicating adequate fat reserves to sustain egg production. Some breeders slightly increase feeding frequency in the weeks before a planned pairing to ensure the female is in peak nutritional condition. Temperature and humidity should be maintained at the upper end of normal ranges, as these conditions may stimulate reproductive readiness.
It is essential to have a plan for the offspring before breeding. A successful Cobalt Blue egg sac can produce one hundred to two hundred or more spiderlings, each of which will need individual housing and ongoing care. Responsible breeders secure commitments from other keepers or retailers before producing a clutch, ensuring that every spiderling has a destination.
