The end of life in a Cobalt Blue Tarantula may come gradually or with relative suddenness, and recognizing the signs of terminal decline is one of the most difficult aspects of keeping these long-lived animals. For females, the transition from senior decline to active dying is often marked by a progressive loss of appetite that extends beyond normal pre-molt fasting, a visibly shrinking abdomen that does not respond to increased feeding opportunities, and a general listlessness that replaces the alert, responsive posture characteristic of a healthy spider.
One of the most telling indicators is a prolonged failure to molt combined with deteriorating body condition. A senior female that has not molted in two or more years and is showing signs of physical decline, such as a dull, worn exoskeleton, loss of setae, and reduced mobility, may be approaching the natural end of her lifespan. The inability to molt successfully is often the proximate cause of death in aging tarantulas, as the old exoskeleton becomes increasingly rigid and constraining while the spider's ability to generate the physiological effort required for molting diminishes.
For mature males, the signs of approaching death are more straightforward. Following their terminal molt, males gradually decline over a period of months, becoming increasingly lethargic, losing interest in food, and spending more time in curled or semi-curled positions. A mature male that has stopped eating entirely and is no longer producing silk or maintaining his web is likely in his final weeks. This decline is a natural and inevitable consequence of the male tarantula's life cycle and is not preventable through husbandry interventions.
The death curl, in which the spider draws all eight legs tightly beneath its body, is the most widely recognized sign of imminent death in tarantulas. However, a spider found in this position is not always beyond help. Dehydration can produce a similar posture, and gently placing the spider in a shallow dish of room-temperature water, with the water level no higher than the spider's sternum, has saved dehydrated individuals that appeared to be dying. If the spider does not respond within an hour or two, it is likely that the decline is irreversible.
