The juvenile stage of the giant African millipede is characterized by rapid and visible growth. During this phase, which generally spans from a few months of age through the first two to three years, the millipede will undergo numerous molts, each one adding new body segments and pairs of legs. A juvenile millipede that began life at only a few millimeters in length will grow to several inches during this period, with its coloration gradually darkening from pale brown or tan to the deep brown or black tones typical of adults.
Each molt represents a significant physiological event. The millipede will stop feeding for several days beforehand and will often retreat deep into the substrate or find a secluded area within the enclosure. During the molt itself, the old exoskeleton splits and the millipede slowly works its way out. The freshly molted millipede is soft and pale, and it may take several days for the new exoskeleton to fully harden. During this vulnerable window, the juvenile should not be handled or disturbed in any way.
The rate of growth depends heavily on environmental conditions, diet quality, and individual genetics. Millipedes kept in warm, humid enclosures with abundant high-quality substrate and supplemental food will generally grow faster than those in less optimal conditions. However, there is natural variation among individuals, and some juveniles will grow more quickly than their siblings even under identical husbandry conditions.
As the millipede grows, keepers will notice the body becoming increasingly robust and cylindrical. The leg count increases steadily, and the antennae become more prominent and active. By the end of the juvenile stage, the millipede will have developed most of the body segments it will carry through adulthood, though a few additional segments may be added during later molts.
