Regular observation is the most valuable health monitoring tool available to the keeper. Take time each evening to note which millipedes are active, whether food offerings are being consumed, and whether the substrate surface shows signs of burrowing and movement. Offer a varied rotation of vegetables and fruits including cucumber, zucchini, sweet potato, squash, melon, banana, and leafy greens. Place food items directly on the substrate surface in the evening, when the millipedes are most active. A small feeding dish or flat stone can serve as a designated feeding station, making it easier to monitor consumption and remove uneaten food before it spoils.

Calcium supplementation should continue throughout the adult years, even though molting is less frequent. The exoskeleton undergoes constant maintenance and minor repairs, and reproductive females in particular have elevated calcium demands. Enclosure & Habitat Management

For a single adult or a pair, an enclosure of at least twenty-four inches long, twelve inches wide, and twelve inches tall is appropriate, with a substrate depth of six to eight inches. Communal groups of three or more adults need proportionally larger enclosures. Glass or plastic terrariums with secure, ventilated lids work well, as they retain humidity effectively while allowing observation.

Frass appears as fine, dark, granular material that accumulates in the upper layers of the substrate. Cork bark flats and tubes, hardwood branches, flat stones, and patches of sphagnum moss provide climbing surfaces, shelter, and microhabitat variety. Millipedes will develop preferred resting and feeding spots, and observing these preferences can give insight into their individual environmental needs.

Substrate hygiene is a key preventive measure. Remove uneaten food promptly, spot-clean any areas of visible mold overgrowth, and monitor for pest populations. Grain mites, fungus gnats, and phorid flies can become nuisances in millipede enclosures, particularly when fresh food is left too long or the substrate becomes excessively wet. These pests are rarely harmful to adult millipedes directly but can indicate conditions that may eventually cause problems.

Watch for signs of dehydration, which can occur even in enclosures that appear adequately humid. A dehydrated millipede may appear slightly wrinkled between body segments, be less responsive to stimulation, and spend more time than usual in the wettest area of the enclosure. Increasing misting frequency and checking that the substrate is damp at depth usually resolves mild dehydration quickly. Persistent dehydration despite adequate humidity may indicate an underlying issue.

Exoskeleton injuries, such as cracks or dents, can occur from falls, being dropped during handling, or being crushed by heavy enclosure decorations. Minor damage may heal during the next molt, but severe injuries can be life-threatening. Prevent injuries by handling gently and over soft surfaces, securing all enclosure decorations firmly, and ensuring that the lid cannot fall into the enclosure. If an injury occurs, maintain elevated humidity to support healing and minimize handling until the next molt.

Behavioral Maturity

Adult giant African millipedes exhibit stable, predictable behavior patterns that make them excellent display animals and gentle pets. Most adults establish a regular daily cycle of burrowing during daylight hours and emerging to forage and explore during the evening and night. Individual millipedes often develop preferences for specific resting spots, travel routes, and feeding locations within their enclosure, and disrupting these familiar patterns through enclosure rearrangement may cause temporary stress.

Defensive behavior in healthy, well-acclimated adults is typically minimal. A millipede that is accustomed to occasional handling and a stable environment will rarely curl or secrete defensive fluid during routine interactions. However, even the most docile individual will react defensively if startled, handled roughly, or exposed to strong stimuli such as sudden light, vibration, or unfamiliar chemical odors. Respect the animal's comfort level and respond to defensive postures by calmly returning it to the enclosure.

Reproductive behavior becomes a regular feature of adult life in mixed-sex groups. Males will periodically court females by aligning alongside them and using their modified legs, known as gonopods, to transfer sperm. Mating can last from several minutes to over an hour, during which the pair should not be disturbed. If breeding is not desired, sex determination and separation before or during early adulthood is the most reliable prevention method.

Adult millipedes that are kept alone will still display a full range of normal behaviors, as this species does not require social interaction for psychological health in the same way that many vertebrate pets do. However, communal groups often show more surface activity and exploration, likely because the movements and chemical cues of conspecifics stimulate foraging and locomotion. A fully grown individual is large enough to rest comfortably across both hands and is unlikely to be injured during careful interaction. Most adults will walk slowly across the keeper's hands and arms, exploring with their antennae and gripping gently with their many legs. The sensation of a large millipede walking on skin is distinctive and is often described as a gentle, tickling wave.

Always pick up an adult millipede by sliding your hands beneath it and allowing it to walk onto your palms. Never grasp, squeeze, or pull a millipede, as this can damage legs and trigger a strong defensive response. Handle the millipede over a soft surface such as a bed or sofa cushion to prevent injury in case it falls or is accidentally dropped. Adult millipedes can sustain serious exoskeleton damage from falls of even a few feet onto hard flooring.

Be aware that defensive secretions from the ozopores can stain skin a yellowish-brown color and may cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals. The secretion contains benzoquinones, which are mildly toxic compounds that deter predators in the wild. While not dangerous to humans in the small quantities produced by a single millipede, the secretion should be washed off promptly and should never contact the eyes or mucous membranes. Individuals who experience skin reactions should limit handling or wear thin gloves.

Handling frequency should be balanced against the millipede's need for a low-stress environment. A session once or twice a week is a reasonable frequency for a well-acclimated adult. Avoid handling during or near a molt, when the millipede has been recently fed a large meal, or when it is displaying clear defensive posture. The goal is a mutually positive interaction that does not compromise the animal's health or comfort.
