The end-of-life phase in giant African millipedes can be gradual or relatively sudden, and recognizing the signs allows keepers to shift their focus from maintenance care to comfort care. The most common early indicator is a sustained and progressive decline in activity. A millipede that was previously active during evening hours may stop emerging from the substrate entirely, remaining buried or motionless on the surface for days at a time. This goes beyond the temporary inactivity associated with pre-molt behavior or seasonal fluctuations.
Feeding cessation is another significant sign. While brief pauses in eating can occur for many reasons, a millipede that has not consumed any food, including substrate material, for two or more weeks despite optimal environmental conditions is likely experiencing systemic decline. The body may begin to appear slightly thinner or less turgid than normal, particularly between the body segments, as the animal's internal reserves are gradually depleted.
Physical changes may become more apparent in the final weeks. The exoskeleton may develop an increasingly dull, dry appearance. Legs may become uncoordinated or cease functioning in groups, causing the millipede to struggle with locomotion or to drag portions of its body. The antennae may become less responsive to stimulation. In some cases, the millipede will adopt a partially curled posture and maintain it for extended periods without fully uncurling.
It is important to distinguish between the signs of natural end-of-life decline and symptoms of a treatable environmental problem. Before concluding that a millipede is dying of old age, thoroughly review all husbandry parameters. Check substrate moisture, temperature, and food quality. Rule out pest infestations, chemical contamination, and physical injury. If the millipede is within the expected lifespan range and no correctable issue is found, the decline is most likely a natural progression toward death.
