The current output should be gentle enough that the axolotl can rest comfortably on the bottom without being pushed around. Positioning the filter outlet against a wall or using a spray bar helps diffuse the flow. Live or artificial plants, hides, and PVC pipes provide necessary shelter and enrichment without complicating maintenance.

Water parameters remain the same as during the larval stage, with temperature between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 7.0 and 7.8, and ammonia and nitrite at zero. However, water changes can be reduced from daily to two or three times per week once a mature nitrogen cycle is established in the filter.

Exercise & Enrichment

While axolotls are not active swimmers in the way that many fish species are, juvenile axolotls still benefit from environmental enrichment that encourages natural behaviors. A well-furnished tank with hides, plants, and varied terrain gives the animal opportunities to explore, forage, and choose between different microenvironments within the enclosure.

Hides are the most important form of enrichment for axolotls at any age. Juveniles should have access to at least one hide per animal, with additional options if multiple axolotls share a tank. Commercial aquarium caves, PVC pipes cut to appropriate lengths, and terracotta pots laid on their sides all make excellent shelters. The hide should be large enough for the axolotl to fit inside comfortably but snug enough to provide a sense of security.

Live plants serve a dual purpose as both enrichment and water quality management. Java fern, anubias, and other cold-water tolerant species provide cover, oxygenate the water, and help absorb nitrates. Floating plants like water lettuce or salvinia create shaded areas that mimic the dim conditions axolotls prefer in their natural habitat. Juvenile axolotls often rest among plant leaves or wedge themselves between stems, so sturdy species that can withstand some physical contact are ideal.

Feeding enrichment can be as simple as varying the location where food is presented or using tongs to move food slowly through the water, stimulating the axolotl's hunting instinct. Scatter feeding frozen bloodworms across the bottom of the tank encourages foraging behavior rather than passive waiting. These small variations in routine provide mental stimulation that contributes to the animal's overall wellbeing and behavioral development.

Sexing & Social Considerations

Determining the sex of an axolotl becomes possible during the later juvenile stage, typically once the animal reaches 15 to 18 centimeters in length or around 10 to 12 months of age. Males develop a noticeably swollen cloaca, the area just behind the hind legs on the underside of the tail. The cloacal swelling in males is rounded and prominent, while females have a much flatter and less conspicuous cloaca. Before this size threshold, accurate sexing is extremely difficult and unreliable.

Once you can identify the sexes of your axolotls, housing decisions become important. Males and females housed together will eventually breed, often prolifically, and a single female can produce hundreds of eggs in a single clutch. Unless you are intentionally breeding and have a plan for the offspring, separating males and females before they reach sexual maturity prevents unwanted reproduction.

Male axolotls can generally coexist peacefully with other males, though territorial disputes are possible in smaller enclosures. Females tend to be less confrontational with one another but still benefit from ample space and multiple hides to minimize stress. Mixed-sex groups should only be maintained by keepers who are prepared and equipped to manage breeding and the resulting offspring.

Regardless of sex, all axolotls housed together should be close in size. A significant size disparity between tankmates increases the risk of the larger animal injuring or attempting to eat the smaller one. If your juveniles are growing at different rates, consider separating them into size-matched groups until they reach a comparable adult size. Monitoring interactions regularly during the juvenile stage helps catch potential aggression problems before they escalate into serious injuries.

Health & Preventive Care

Juvenile axolotls are generally hardier than larvae but remain susceptible to several health issues that require attentive care. The most common health problems during the juvenile stage are fungal infections, bacterial infections, and issues related to water quality. A consistent maintenance routine that includes regular water testing, scheduled water changes, and prompt removal of waste and uneaten food forms the foundation of preventive health care.

Fungal infections typically appear as white, fuzzy patches on the skin, gills, or limbs. They are most often triggered by poor water quality, minor injuries, or stress from overcrowding or temperature fluctuations. Early-stage fungal infections often respond well to daily salt baths using a solution prepared at a concentration recommended by your veterinarian. Severe or persistent infections may require antifungal treatments prescribed by an exotic animal veterinarian.

Bacterial infections can present as reddened skin, cloudy eyes, gill deterioration, or open sores. These infections frequently follow periods of compromised water quality or physical injury. Veterinary consultation is strongly recommended for bacterial infections, as appropriate treatment depends on the specific pathogen involved.

Impaction from substrate ingestion is a serious concern during the juvenile stage. Signs of impaction include loss of appetite, bloating, constipation, and floating at the surface. If you suspect impaction, place the axolotl in a bare-bottom container with cold, clean water and fast the animal for two to three days to see if the obstruction passes naturally. If symptoms persist, seek veterinary care promptly. Prevention through appropriate substrate choices is always preferable to treatment.

Regular visual health checks should be part of your daily routine. Observe your juvenile axolotl's gills, skin, limbs, and behavior each day during feeding. Healthy gills should be full and feathery with good blood flow. The skin should be smooth and free of lesions. The animal should be alert, responsive, and interested in food.
