Weekly water changes of 20 to 30 percent keep parameters stable and remove dissolved organic compounds that accumulate between changes. Fine sand remains the preferred substrate for adult axolotls. At adult size, the risk of sand impaction is minimal, and sand allows axolotls to engage in natural behaviors such as walking along the bottom and digging. The sand bed should be kept clean by gently stirring it during water changes and siphoning out debris that accumulates on the surface. Some keepers prefer a bare-bottom setup for the easiest possible maintenance, which is a perfectly valid choice.

Hides and shelter are essential for adult axolotls and should be considered mandatory tank furnishings rather than optional decorations. Each axolotl should have access to at least two hides, giving the animal options and reducing stress from feeling exposed. Commercially available aquarium caves, PVC pipe sections, slate stacked into overhangs, and large ceramic pots all work well. Hides should be smooth with no sharp edges that could damage the axolotl's delicate skin.

Lighting should be kept dim. Axolotls lack eyelids and are sensitive to bright light, which causes stress and drives them into hiding for extended periods. Bacterial infections can be more serious and often present as red patches on the skin, deteriorating gills, cloudy eyes, or open wounds that fail to heal. Quarantine procedures should be standard practice whenever introducing new animals, plants, or decor into an established tank. New axolotls should be quarantined for a minimum of 30 days in a separate, fully equipped tank before being added to the main enclosure. New plants should be rinsed thoroughly and soaked in clean water for several days to remove potential contaminants. These simple precautions dramatically reduce the risk of introducing disease to your healthy animals.

Behavioral Maturity

Adult axolotls settle into predictable behavioral patterns that make them surprisingly engaging pets despite their relatively sedentary lifestyle. Most adults establish a daily routine, resting in their preferred hiding spot during the day and becoming more active in the evening and nighttime hours. This crepuscular and nocturnal activity pattern reflects their natural behavior in the wild and should be accommodated rather than disrupted.

Food recognition behavior is well developed in adult axolotls. Many adults learn to associate their keeper's presence with feeding and will emerge from their hides, swim toward the front of the tank, and follow the keeper's movements along the glass. Some individuals become comfortable enough to accept food directly from the hand, though care should be taken, as axolotl teeth are small but their bite reflex can be surprisingly strong.

Adult axolotls housed together typically establish a stable social hierarchy with minimal conflict, provided that the tank is large enough and sufficient hides are available. Occasional gill nipping may still occur but is generally less frequent and less aggressive than during the juvenile stage. If one animal becomes a persistent target of aggression, permanent separation may be necessary, as chronic stress from bullying can suppress the immune system and lead to secondary health problems.

Stress behaviors in adult axolotls include forward-curled gills, frantic swimming, floating at the surface, refusing food, and excessive skin slime production. Any of these behaviors, particularly if they persist for more than a day or two, should prompt a thorough review of water parameters, temperature, and any recent changes to the tank environment. Axolotls are creatures of habit, and even seemingly minor changes like rearranging decor or switching to a new food can cause temporary stress.

Skin, Gills & Regeneration

One of the most remarkable features of axolotls is their extraordinary regenerative ability, which remains fully functional throughout adulthood. Adult axolotls can regenerate lost limbs, damaged gills, portions of their heart, spinal cord tissue, and even parts of their brain. This regenerative capacity is a defining characteristic of the species and is one of the primary reasons axolotls are so extensively studied in scientific research.

Gill health is the most visible indicator of overall wellbeing in adult axolotls. Healthy gills are full, elaborately branched, and display a rich red or pink coloration from the blood flowing through them. The gill filaments should wave gently in the water current. Gills that appear shrunken, pale, or have lost their feathery branches are signaling a problem, usually related to water quality, dissolved oxygen levels, or temperature stress.

The axolotl's skin is permeable and absorbs substances directly from the surrounding water, which makes water quality doubly important. Medications, cleaning products, and other chemicals can enter the axolotl's system through its skin even in small concentrations. Never use soap, detergent, or household cleaners on any equipment that comes into contact with the axolotl's water. All cleaning should be done with water only, or with products specifically designed for aquatic animal use.

Shedding of the outer skin layer, known as the slime coat, occurs periodically and is a normal process. Adult axolotls may shed more frequently when stressed, when water conditions change, or during seasonal temperature shifts. A thin, transparent layer of shed skin drifting in the water is nothing to worry about. However, excessive or continuous shedding accompanied by other symptoms such as lethargy or appetite loss may indicate an underlying health issue that warrants investigation.

Minor injuries such as small skin abrasions, superficial cuts, or nipped gill filaments typically heal completely within one to three weeks in clean, cool water without any intervention.
