Postpartum Care

The hours and days following kidding are a critical period for both the doe and her newborn kids. After the last kid is delivered, the doe should pass the placenta within approximately two to twelve hours. Do not pull on a retained placenta, as this can cause hemorrhage or uterine damage. If the placenta has not been passed within twelve hours, contact your veterinarian for guidance. Once passed, remove it from the kidding area promptly to maintain hygiene.

Monitor the doe closely for signs of postpartum complications. Some first-time mothers need gentle encouragement and patience to accept their kids, and in rare cases, a kid may need to be bottle-raised if the doe is unable or unwilling to nurse.
