Algerian Hedgehog hoglets enter the world in a remarkably undeveloped state. Born blind, deaf, and almost entirely helpless, each hoglet weighs between eight and eighteen grams at birth — roughly the weight of a few coins. A typical litter consists of three to six hoglets, though litters as small as one and as large as ten have been documented. At birth, the hoglets' spines are soft, white, and embedded just beneath a fluid-filled layer of edematous skin that protects the mother's birth canal during delivery. Within a few hours, these initial spines begin to emerge and harden as the protective skin dries.
The mother should be left as undisturbed as possible during and immediately after birth. Algerian Hedgehogs are solitary animals by nature, and a dam that feels threatened or stressed during the postpartum period may abandon or cannibalize her litter. This behavior, while distressing, is an instinct-driven response to perceived danger. Noise, vibrations, unfamiliar scents, and the presence of other animals near the nesting area are all potential triggers. Keep the room quiet, dim, and free of foot traffic for at least the first 48 hours.
Within the first hour of life, hoglets should begin rooting toward the mother's ventral side to nurse. Algerian Hedgehogs have five pairs of mammae, and in most litters there are enough nipples for every hoglet to feed simultaneously. Colostrum delivery during these earliest feedings is critical, as it transfers maternal antibodies that will protect the hoglets during their first vulnerable weeks. A hoglet that is persistently pushed to the periphery of the nest and fails to nurse may need careful monitoring, though direct handling at this stage should be avoided unless the hoglet's life is clearly at risk.
Resist the urge to inspect, count, or weigh the hoglets during the first 24 hours unless there is a genuine emergency. The dam's acceptance of her litter is the top priority, and any disruption increases the risk of rejection. If observation is necessary, do so from a distance and without casting shadows over the nest. A small, quiet camera placed near the enclosure before birth can allow remote monitoring without physical intrusion.
