The transition from dependent hoglet to independent juvenile is a defining period in an Algerian Hedgehog's life. Weaning begins naturally between four and six weeks of age as the dam gradually reduces nursing frequency and the hoglets show increasing interest in solid food. By six to seven weeks, most hoglets are eating solid food consistently and nursing only intermittently, though some dams will tolerate occasional nursing attempts for an additional week or two.
Solid food introduction should begin around three and a half to four weeks with small amounts of high-quality, protein-rich cat kibble softened in warm water to a mushy consistency. Scatter a few mealworms or waxworms near the food dish to attract the hoglets' attention through scent. Most hoglets will begin sampling solid food tentatively within a day or two, and by five weeks they should be eating measurable quantities. Gradually reduce the water content in the softened kibble over the course of two weeks until the hoglets are eating dry food.
Separation from the dam should occur between six and eight weeks of age. By this point, the hoglets are fully weaned and the dam's tolerance for their presence is declining. In the wild, Algerian Hedgehog mothers disperse their young around this age, and captive dams may become increasingly irritable or aggressive toward hoglets that remain in the enclosure too long. Male hoglets should be separated from their mother and any female siblings by eight weeks at the latest to prevent precocious mating, as some males can reach sexual maturity earlier than expected.
Each hoglet should be moved to its own individual enclosure at the time of separation. Algerian Hedgehogs are solitary animals that do not benefit from companionship and will become stressed or aggressive if housed together past weaning age. Even same-sex siblings that appeared to coexist peacefully as nursing hoglets will typically begin fighting as they mature. The individual enclosure should be fully set up and maintained at the appropriate temperature before the hoglet is transferred, minimizing the stress of the transition.
