Weaning begins naturally between four and six weeks of age as the dam gradually reduces nursing frequency and the hoglets show increasing interest in solid food. By six to seven weeks, most hoglets are eating solid food consistently and nursing only intermittently, though some dams will tolerate occasional nursing attempts for an additional week or two.

Solid food introduction should begin around three and a half to four weeks with small amounts of high-quality, protein-rich cat kibble softened in warm water to a mushy consistency. This is normal and should not be confused with mite infestation, though the symptoms can look similar. A distinguishing factor is that quilling produces relatively even spine loss across the body, while mite infestations tend to cause patchy loss concentrated on the face, flanks, or rump. Many juvenile hedgehogs adapt well to water bottles, which keep the water cleaner, but some individuals prefer a dish. If using a dish, choose one that is heavy enough to resist tipping and shallow enough that a small hoglet cannot submerge its face. Monitor water intake carefully during the juvenile period, as decreased drinking can be an early sign of illness.

Behavioral Development & Socialization

The juvenile period is the most formative window for shaping an Algerian Hedgehog's temperament and tolerance for human interaction. Hedgehogs that receive consistent, gentle handling between six and sixteen weeks of age are far more likely to become calm, manageable adults. Those that miss this window or experience rough handling during it may remain persistently defensive, making routine care — health checks, nail trims, bathing — far more difficult for the remainder of their lives.

Daily handling sessions should last between fifteen and thirty minutes. Begin each session by allowing the hoglet to uncurl in your cupped hands at its own pace, resisting the temptation to pry it open. Speak in a low, even voice and avoid sudden movements. Once the hoglet uncurls and begins to explore, let it walk across your hands and arms, gently redirecting it when necessary. The goal is to build the hedgehog's association between your scent, warmth, and voice and the experience of safety.

Juvenile Algerian Hedgehogs display a wide range of exploratory and play behaviors during this period. They will investigate new objects by sniffing, nudging, and occasionally attempting to bite. They may run on exercise wheels with increasing enthusiasm — wheel running is one of the most important behavioral outlets for captive hedgehogs, and a solid-surface wheel (never wire) should be introduced as soon as the hoglet is large enough to use it safely, typically around eight to ten weeks. Wheel running can account for several miles of activity per night and is essential for physical and psychological health.

Self-anointing behavior becomes more frequent and dramatic during the juvenile period. When the hoglet encounters a new taste or smell, it will produce large quantities of frothy saliva and contort its body to spread the saliva across its spines. This behavior can look alarming to new keepers but is entirely normal and not a sign of illness. The biological purpose of self-anointing remains debated, with hypotheses ranging from scent camouflage to parasite deterrence. Regardless of its function, self-anointing should never be discouraged or interrupted.

Aggression between juvenile hedgehogs housed together — even temporarily — can escalate quickly. Algerian Hedgehogs do not play-fight like social species, and what may appear to be mild jostling between siblings can result in bitten ears, feet, or bellies within minutes. Once separated into individual enclosures, juveniles should not be reintroduced to each other for social purposes. The only exception is supervised, brief introductions between opposite-sex adults for breeding, conducted under controlled conditions.

Habitat & Enclosure Setup

A juvenile Algerian Hedgehog's enclosure should be spacious, secure, and designed around the animal's nocturnal activity patterns. The minimum recommended floor space for a single hedgehog is four square feet, though larger enclosures are always preferable. Plastic storage bins with ventilated lids, modified glass aquariums, and custom-built enclosures with smooth walls are all suitable options. Wire-sided cages should be avoided, as hedgehogs can catch their feet, toes, and spines in wire mesh, causing injury.

The hiding spot is not optional — hedgehogs are prey animals that experience significant stress without a dark, enclosed retreat. Place the hiding spot in the cooler end of the enclosure so the hedgehog can thermoregulate by choosing to rest in or away from the warmer zone.

Temperatures below 68 degrees can trigger torpor — a state of depressed metabolic activity that superficially resembles hibernation — in Algerian Hedgehogs. Health Monitoring & Veterinary Care

Preventive veterinary care during the juvenile period establishes the health baseline that will guide the hedgehog's care throughout its life. A comprehensive wellness exam should be scheduled shortly after acquisition or separation from the dam, ideally with an exotics veterinarian experienced in hedgehog medicine. This initial exam should include a full physical assessment, a fecal flotation test for internal parasites, and a skin scrape if there is any indication of mites or fungal infection.

Internal parasites — particularly intestinal roundworms and coccidia — are relatively common in juvenile hedgehogs and may not produce obvious symptoms until the parasite burden becomes heavy. Loose or green-tinged stools, poor weight gain despite adequate food intake, and a distended abdomen are all potential indicators. Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, a progressive degenerative neurological condition, can begin to manifest during the juvenile period in affected individuals, though onset is more common in adults. Early signs include a slight wobble or unsteadiness in the hind legs, difficulty curling into a tight ball, and a tendency to fall to one side when walking. There is no cure for this condition, and a confirmed diagnosis carries a poor long-term prognosis. Any juvenile hedgehog showing unexplained neurological signs should be examined promptly to differentiate from treatable causes of ataxia such as ear infections or spinal injury.

Preparing for Adulthood

The transition from juvenile to adult occurs gradually in Algerian Hedgehogs, with most individuals reaching full physical maturity between five and seven months of age. Sexual maturity may arrive slightly earlier — some males can produce viable sperm as young as eight weeks, and females can conceive by three to four months — but physical and behavioral maturity lags behind reproductive capability. A hedgehog that is physically mature is not necessarily behaviorally or socially ready for breeding, and early breeding in females carries elevated health risks.

As the hedgehog approaches adulthood, its dietary needs begin to stabilize. The higher caloric intake required during the rapid growth phase of the juvenile period should be gradually adjusted downward to prevent obesity, which is one of the most common and most damaging health problems in captive hedgehogs. Begin monitoring body condition by observing the hedgehog's ability to curl into a complete ball — a hedgehog that cannot fully tuck its head and legs due to excess fat around the face and axillae is overweight.

Activity patterns solidify during late adolescence. Most Algerian Hedgehogs establish a consistent nightly routine by five to six months of age, typically emerging from their hiding spot shortly after dark, eating, running on their wheel, exploring the enclosure, and then returning to sleep before dawn. If a juvenile that was previously active begins spending entire nights in its hiding spot without eating or running, this change in pattern warrants attention and possibly a veterinary visit to rule out illness or environmental stressors.

The habituation and handling work done during the juvenile period yields its long-term dividends as the hedgehog enters adulthood. A well-socialized juvenile that has been handled consistently will transition into an adult that tolerates — and in many cases seems to enjoy — regular human interaction. An unsocialized juvenile, conversely, becomes an adult that is difficult to handle, resistant to health checks, and generally less rewarding to keep. The time invested during these formative months shapes the entire keeper-animal relationship going forward.
