Breeding Readiness

Responsible breeding of Russian Blues begins long before any mating takes place. A prospective breeding cat should be fully mature, in excellent health, and a strong representative of the breed standard. While female Russian Blues can reach sexual maturity as early as five to six months of age, most experienced breeders agree that a queen should not be bred until she is at least one year old and has reached full physical maturity. Males are generally ready for stud work between one and two years of age.

Before entering a breeding program, both the queen and the stud should undergo thorough health screening. A comprehensive veterinary examination should include blood work, urinalysis, testing for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, and screening for any hereditary conditions known to appear in the breed. Both cats should be current on all vaccinations and free of internal and external parasites.

Temperament evaluation is an often-overlooked aspect of breeding readiness that is particularly important in Russian Blues. The breed's characteristic gentle, loyal, and slightly reserved personality should be considered when selecting breeding pairs. Cats that are excessively fearful, aggressive, or display significant behavioral abnormalities should not be bred, as temperament has a significant heritable component. The goal of any breeding program should be to produce kittens that are physically healthy, conformationally sound, and temperamentally well-suited to life as companion animals.

Prospective breeders should also ensure they have the knowledge, resources, and time commitment necessary to manage a breeding program responsibly. The Estrous Cycle

Female cats are seasonally polyestrous, meaning they cycle repeatedly throughout the breeding season, which in the Northern Hemisphere is typically from late January through September. However, indoor cats exposed to extended artificial lighting may cycle year-round. Understanding the stages of the estrous cycle is essential for timing breedings successfully and managing the queen's comfort and behavior.

The cycle consists of several phases. Proestrus lasts one to two days and is characterized by subtle behavioral changes such as increased affection, restlessness, and occasional vocalization. The queen may rub her face and body against objects and people more frequently than usual. During this phase, she is attracting the attention of males but will not yet accept mating.

Estrus, or active heat, follows proestrus and typically lasts four to ten days. During this phase, the queen's behavior becomes much more pronounced. She may vocalize loudly and persistently, assume a mating posture called lordosis when the base of her tail or lower back is touched, roll on the floor, and make persistent attempts to escape the house if she is kept indoors. Russian Blues may be somewhat more restrained in their heat behavior compared to some other breeds, but the signs are usually unmistakable to an observant owner.

Cats are induced ovulators, meaning that ovulation is triggered by the physical act of mating rather than occurring spontaneously. Multiple matings over the course of estrus increase the likelihood of ovulation and successful conception. If the queen is not bred, or if mating does not trigger ovulation, she will cycle back into heat after a brief interestrus period of one to three weeks. This repeated cycling without breeding can be stressful for the queen and is one of the health-related arguments for spaying cats not intended for a breeding program.

Pregnancy & Gestation

The gestation period in cats is approximately 63 to 67 days, with most Russian Blue queens delivering around day 65. Confirming pregnancy can be accomplished through veterinary palpation at around three to four weeks after mating, or via ultrasound, which can detect fetal heartbeats and provide an approximate litter count. Radiographs taken after approximately day 45 provide the most accurate count of kittens, as the fetal skeletons have calcified sufficiently to be visible on film.

During pregnancy, the queen's nutritional requirements increase progressively. By the final third of gestation, she may require up to fifty percent more calories than her normal maintenance intake. A high-quality kitten food is often recommended during pregnancy and lactation, as it provides the elevated protein, fat, and caloric density needed to support both the developing kittens and the queen's own metabolic demands. Fresh water should always be available, and feeding smaller, more frequent meals can help accommodate the decreasing abdominal space as the kittens grow.

Behavioral changes during pregnancy are common and may include increased affection, nesting behavior as delivery approaches, and decreased activity in the final weeks. The queen should have access to a quiet, comfortable nesting area well before her due date, allowing her to become familiar with the space and feel secure in it. A large, sturdy box lined with clean, washable bedding in a warm, dimly lit room that is away from household traffic makes an ideal queening area.

Regular veterinary monitoring throughout pregnancy helps ensure that both the queen and her developing kittens are progressing normally. Any signs of vaginal discharge, loss of appetite lasting more than 24 hours, lethargy, or visible distress should prompt an immediate veterinary consultation, as complications such as infection, fetal resorption, or dystocia require prompt professional intervention.

Queening & Delivery

As the queen approaches her due date, observant caregivers will notice several signs that delivery is imminent. A drop in body temperature to below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, measured rectally, typically occurs 12 to 24 hours before the onset of labor. The queen may become restless, refuse food, seek out her nesting area, and vocalize more than usual. Some queens become unusually clingy with their primary caregiver, while others prefer solitude.

Labor in cats proceeds in three stages. The first stage involves uterine contractions and cervical dilation and may last 12 to 24 hours. The queen may pant, pace, and appear uncomfortable, but visible straining should not yet be occurring. The second stage begins with active straining and the delivery of kittens. Each kitten is typically born within 30 to 60 minutes of the onset of visible pushing, and the interval between kittens can range from a few minutes to over an hour. The third stage involves the passage of the placenta, which should follow each kitten.

Russian Blue litters typically consist of three to five kittens, though litter size can vary. The queen should be allowed to manage the delivery process with minimal intervention, as she will normally rupture the amniotic sac, chew through the umbilical cord, clean each kitten to stimulate breathing, and consume the placenta. Intervention is warranted if a kitten remains in the birth canal with active straining for more than 30 minutes, if the queen fails to clear the amniotic sac from a kitten's face, or if more than four hours pass between kittens when more are expected.

While most feline deliveries proceed without complications, dystocia and other emergencies can arise suddenly, and rapid access to professional help can be life-saving for both the queen and her kittens.

Postpartum Care

The first few weeks after delivery are a demanding period for the queen, and attentive care during this time supports both her recovery and the health of her kittens. The queen should be monitored for signs of postpartum complications, including excessive bleeding, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, loss of appetite, or neglect of the kittens. Any of these signs warrants prompt veterinary attention.

Nutrition during lactation is critically important, as the queen's caloric demands peak at three to four weeks postpartum, when she may require two to three times her normal maintenance caloric intake to support milk production for a growing litter. Free-feeding a high-quality kitten food during lactation ensures the queen can eat as much as she needs to meet these extraordinary energy demands. Fresh water must be available at all times, as dehydration can rapidly compromise milk production.

The nesting area should be kept clean and warm, with bedding changed daily. The queen should have easy access to food, water, and a litter box without needing to travel far from her kittens. During the first few days after delivery, many queens are reluctant to leave the nest at all, and placing necessities nearby reduces her stress and ensures she stays well-nourished and hydrated.

Mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands, is a postpartum complication that breeders should be able to recognize. Affected glands become swollen, hard, hot, and painful, and the queen may be reluctant to nurse or may show signs of systemic illness such as fever and lethargy. Mastitis requires veterinary treatment with antibiotics and supportive care, and affected kittens may need supplemental feeding until the queen recovers.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Russian Blues, or any pedigreed cat, carries significant ethical responsibilities that extend far beyond the mechanics of mating and whelping. Responsible breeders prioritize the health, temperament, and welfare of their cats above profit, prestige, or the simple desire to produce kittens. Every litter brought into the world should be the result of a carefully considered decision aimed at preserving and improving the breed.

A commitment to genetic diversity and health screening is fundamental to ethical breeding. Breeding programs that rely on an excessively narrow gene pool risk amplifying hereditary health problems and reducing the overall vigor of the breed. Responsible breeders research pedigrees carefully, avoid excessive inbreeding, and participate in breed-specific health screening programs. They are transparent with kitten buyers about the health history of both parents and any known health risks within their lines.

Every kitten produced by a responsible breeder should have a secure, loving home waiting for it before it is born, or the breeder should be prepared to keep any kittens that are not placed. Responsible breeders screen potential buyers carefully, prioritize the welfare of their kittens over financial considerations, and include contract provisions such as return-to-breeder clauses that ensure no cat they produce ever ends up in a shelter or rescue.
