Breeding Burmese cats is a serious commitment that requires extensive preparation, knowledge, and resources. Before considering a breeding program, ensure that both the prospective queen and stud have been thoroughly evaluated by a veterinarian and cleared for breeding. This evaluation should include a complete physical examination, genetic screening for conditions known to affect the Burmese breed, blood typing, and testing for infectious diseases including feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Burmese females typically reach sexual maturity between five and nine months of age, but physical maturity for safe breeding does not occur until at least twelve to eighteen months. Breeding a queen before she is physically mature increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery and can compromise both her health and the health of the kittens. Males may begin showing breeding behavior as early as six months but should not be used for stud service until they are fully mature, typically around twelve months or older.

Genetic health screening is particularly important in Burmese breeding. The breed has documented predispositions to hypokalemia, diabetes mellitus, and a craniofacial defect that can occur in certain bloodlines, particularly in the contemporary or American Burmese type. Responsible breeders research pedigrees carefully, work with genetic counselors when appropriate, and never breed cats that carry genes for known heritable defects.

Both the queen and the stud should be in excellent overall health, at an ideal body weight, and current on all vaccinations and parasite prevention before breeding. The Heat Cycle

Burmese queens are seasonally polyestrous in natural lighting conditions, meaning they cycle repeatedly during periods of longer daylight hours, typically from early spring through late autumn. However, indoor cats exposed to consistent artificial lighting may cycle year-round. Understanding the stages of the feline estrous cycle is essential for timing breeding appropriately.

The estrous cycle in cats consists of several phases. Proestrus lasts one to two days and is characterized by increased affection, restlessness, and the beginning of behavioral changes. The queen may rub against furniture and people more than usual and vocalize softly. Estrus, the phase during which the queen is receptive to mating, typically lasts four to ten days. During estrus, the Burmese queen will display unmistakable behavioral signs including loud, persistent calling, rolling on the floor, lordosis posture with the tail deflected to the side, and treading with the hind feet.

As the pregnancy progresses, her abdomen will visibly enlarge and her food requirements will increase substantially. By the final trimester, the queen may be consuming 50 to 75 percent more food than her normal maintenance diet.

Transition the queen to a high-quality kitten food during pregnancy, as the increased caloric density and nutrient profile of kitten food meets the demands of fetal development and prepares her body for lactation. Feed smaller, more frequent meals as her expanding abdomen compresses her stomach capacity. Ensure constant access to fresh water and provide a quiet, comfortable environment with minimal stress.

Schedule a veterinary check-up in the final week of pregnancy to confirm that the kittens are positioned normally and that the queen is in good condition for delivery. Queening Preparation

Prepare a queening area well in advance of the expected delivery date, ideally two to three weeks before, so the queen has time to become comfortable in the space. The sides should be high enough to prevent newborn kittens from crawling out but low enough for the queen to enter and exit easily.

As the delivery date approaches, the queen will begin nesting behavior, seeking out enclosed, private spaces and arranging bedding. She may become more clingy and vocal, or conversely more withdrawn and quiet. A drop in body temperature below 99 degrees Fahrenheit typically indicates that labor will begin within 24 hours. The queen may refuse food in the hours before labor begins and may exhibit restlessness, panting, or excessive grooming of her genital area.

During labor, your role is primarily that of a calm, quiet observer. Most Burmese queens deliver their kittens without complications and instinctively handle cleaning, cord severing, and initial nursing. Intervene only if a kitten is not breathing, if the queen fails to remove the amniotic sac within a minute or two, or if active labor stalls for more than an hour between kittens. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you observe heavy bleeding, green or foul-smelling discharge before the first kitten, or signs of extreme distress in the queen.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period requires attentive monitoring of both the queen and her kittens. In the hours following delivery, confirm that all placentas have been delivered, one for each kitten, as a retained placenta can cause serious infection. The queen will typically eat some or all of the placentas, which is a normal and instinctive behavior that provides nutrients and helps stimulate milk production.

Monitor the queen's recovery closely over the first 48 to 72 hours. She should be alert, nursing her kittens actively, eating and drinking normally, and showing appropriate maternal behavior. A moderate amount of dark reddish-brown vaginal discharge, called lochia, is normal for up to three weeks after delivery. Contact your veterinarian if the discharge becomes bright red, foul-smelling, or contains pus, or if the queen develops a fever, refuses to eat, or shows signs of lethargy.

The queen's nutritional demands during lactation are enormous, often exceeding those of late pregnancy. Continue feeding high-quality kitten food in generous, measured portions, offered several times daily. Some breeders offer food on a near-free-choice basis during peak lactation, as the caloric demands of nursing a litter can be extraordinary. Ensure constant access to fresh water, as dehydration can reduce milk production.

Keep the queening area clean and warm, changing bedding at least daily. Limit visitors and handling of the kittens during the first week to reduce stress on the queen. Weigh each kitten daily to track growth and identify any that may not be nursing adequately. A postpartum veterinary visit for the queen and her kittens within the first week is recommended to assess the health of the entire family and address any emerging concerns.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible Burmese breeding goes far beyond producing attractive kittens. Responsible breeders maintain transparent health records and share this information openly with kitten buyers.
