This stage can last 12 to 24 hours, particularly for first-time mothers.

Active labor — the second stage — begins when visible abdominal contractions produce the first kitten. Each kitten is typically delivered within 30 to 60 minutes of the onset of active straining. The queen will usually break the amniotic sac, sever the umbilical cord, and clean each kitten herself, stimulating breathing in the process. Between kittens, the queen may rest and nurse already-delivered kittens. The interval between births can range from ten minutes to over an hour, with the entire delivery process for a typical Bengal litter of four to six kittens spanning several hours.

Know when to seek veterinary help. Contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic if the queen has been actively straining for more than one hour without producing a kitten, if more than four hours pass between kittens when you know more remain, if the queen appears exhausted or in distress, if there is profuse hemorrhage, or if a kitten appears stuck in the birth canal. After all kittens have been delivered, count the placentas to confirm one has been passed for each kitten. A retained placenta can cause serious infection. Postpartum Care

The weeks following delivery are demanding for the Bengal queen as she recovers from the physical exertion of birthing while simultaneously providing sole nutritional support to a litter of hungry kittens. The queen's caloric needs during peak lactation — typically around three to four weeks postpartum — can reach three to four times her normal maintenance intake. Provide unlimited access to high-quality kitten or growth formula food and fresh water, as inadequate nutrition during lactation can quickly deplete the queen's body condition and compromise milk production.

Monitor the queen's mammary glands daily for signs of mastitis — infection of the milk-producing tissue. Symptoms include swollen, hot, painful, or discolored mammary glands, reluctance to nurse, fever, and lethargy. Mastitis requires prompt veterinary treatment with antibiotics and pain management. In mild cases, continued nursing helps drain the affected gland. In severe cases, the affected gland may need to be expressed manually or the kittens may need to be supplemented with bottle feeding.

The queen's postpartum discharge — called lochia — should gradually decrease in volume and darken in color over the first one to two weeks. A small amount of reddish-brown discharge is normal, but heavy bleeding, bright red blood, or foul-smelling discharge indicates complications that require veterinary attention. The queen should be kept in a clean environment with bedding changed daily to minimize infection risk during the postpartum recovery period.

As the kittens grow and become more mobile, the queen will begin spending increasing time away from the nest. This is normal maternal behavior and coincides with the gradual weaning process. The queen should always have access to a quiet retreat where she can rest undisturbed when she chooses. By six to eight weeks postpartum, as the kittens transition to solid food, the queen's milk production naturally decreases and her body begins recovering toward pre-pregnancy condition.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible Bengal breeding is guided by the fundamental principle that every breeding decision should improve the breed's health, temperament, and type while ensuring the wellbeing of every individual cat involved. This standard demands far more than simply pairing two attractive Bengals — it requires deep knowledge of genetics, pedigree analysis, health screening protocols, and an unwavering commitment to placing kittens in appropriate homes.

Genetic diversity is a critical consideration in Bengal breeding programs. The breed's relatively recent development from Asian Leopard Cat crosses means that the gene pool, while expanding, remains narrower than long-established breeds. Responsible breeders study pedigrees carefully to avoid excessive inbreeding, which increases the expression of recessive genetic disorders and compromises immune function. Outcrossing strategies and collaboration with other ethical breeders help maintain genetic health across the breed population.

Every responsible breeder must have a clear plan for every kitten produced before the breeding takes place. This includes established relationships with prospective kitten buyers who have been thoroughly vetted for their ability and commitment to provide appropriate homes for this demanding breed. Bengals are not suitable for every household, and experienced breeders are candid with prospective owners about the breed's high exercise, enrichment, and social needs.
