Small, recently retained plugs may cause no obvious symptoms and may pass spontaneously with appropriate husbandry support. Larger, chronically retained plugs can cause visible swelling, pain responses when the area is touched, and behavioral changes. Severely impacted plugs can become infected, creating abscesses that damage hemipenal tissue. Untreated, infected plugs can lead to systemic illness, hemipene necrosis, and potentially life-threatening complications.
With appropriate recognition and management, retained hemipene plugs are highly treatable and, in most cases, easily resolved. Manual removal of accessible plugs can often be performed by experienced keepers using gentle technique, though veterinary assistance is recommended for difficult cases or those with signs of infection. Prevention through appropriate husbandry, particularly adequate humidity, is highly effective. Regular monitoring of the vent area allows early detection before plugs become problematic.
