Urinary tract infections can occur in rabbits of any age, breed, or sex, though certain populations face elevated risk, particularly female rabbits, older animals, and those with predisposing conditions such as bladder sludge or urinary stones. Urinary tract infections in rabbits typically develop when bacteria ascend from the external environment through the urethra into the bladder, where they colonize and multiply in the normally sterile urine. The most common causative organisms include Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with E. coli being particularly prevalent. Rabbits have unique urinary physiology that may predispose them to certain urinary conditions, including their excretion of excess calcium through the urinary system rather than through the intestinal tract as in most other mammals. When infection ascends to involve the kidneys, the consequences become much more serious, with potential for septicemia, permanent kidney damage, and death. Even with successful treatment, recurrent infections are common in some rabbits, requiring ongoing vigilance and potentially long-term management strategies.
Treatment of urinary tract infections in rabbits requires appropriate antibiotic therapy guided by bacterial culture and sensitivity testing whenever possible. Early detection and treatment dramatically improve outcomes and reduce the risk of complications. Because rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness and discomfort, owners must be attentive to subtle changes in urinary behavior, appetite, and overall demeanor.
