Glucose regulation fails, causing dangerous blood sugar fluctuations. Bile flow is compromised, leading to jaundice. The breakdown of normal metabolic pathways creates widespread biochemical derangement that affects every organ system. Secondary kidney failure often develops, creating hepatorenal syndrome that dramatically worsens prognosis.
The prognosis for liver failure in rabbits is generally poor, though outcomes depend on the underlying cause, the extent of liver damage, and how quickly treatment is initiated. Some cases of acute liver failure, particularly those caused by reversible conditions like hepatic lipidosis caught relatively early, can potentially recover if aggressive supportive care allows time for liver regeneration. However, chronic progressive liver disease that has advanced to failure has minimal recovery potential. Treatment focuses on intensive supportive care to maintain life while addressing any treatable underlying cause and hoping for liver regeneration.
