Arthritis, also called osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease, is a progressive condition affecting the joints of rabbits, characterized by deterioration of cartilage, inflammation, and pain. This common ailment primarily affects the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones within joints, leading to pain, stiffness, decreased mobility, and reduced quality of life. Arthritis is extremely common in domestic rabbits, particularly those over five years of age, with studies suggesting that the majority of older rabbits have some degree of arthritic change visible on radiographs, even if clinical symptoms are not yet apparent. Any rabbit can develop arthritis, though senior rabbits, overweight rabbits, and those with prior joint injuries face the highest risk.
Osteoarthritis develops when the protective cartilage that cushions joint surfaces gradually breaks down over time. This deterioration can result from normal wear and tear accumulated over years, previous joint injuries or infections, conformational abnormalities, obesity placing excess stress on joints, or genetic predisposition. As cartilage thins and erodes, the underlying bone becomes exposed and may develop abnormal bone growths called osteophytes. The joint capsule thickens and produces inflammatory substances that cause pain. The synovial fluid that normally lubricates the joint changes in composition and loses its protective properties. These changes collectively result in the pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility that characterize clinical arthritis.
The impact of arthritis on rabbit health and welfare is substantial and multifaceted. Affected rabbits experience chronic pain that significantly diminishes quality of life, though they may hide obvious signs due to prey animal instincts. Reduced mobility leads to decreased exercise, which can contribute to weight gain that further stresses affected joints. Rabbits with hind limb or spinal arthritis may have difficulty reaching their cecotropes, small soft feces produced by the cecum that must be eaten directly from the anus for proper nutrition. This inability leads to cecotrope accumulation, soiled fur, and potential malnutrition. Painful rabbits often show decreased appetite, which can trigger life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis. Secondary conditions including urine scald from difficulty posturing to urinate and pododermatitis from altered weight bearing commonly develop.
While arthritis cannot be cured, it is highly manageable with appropriate veterinary care and owner commitment. Effective management typically combines pain medication, environmental modifications, weight management, and supportive care to maintain comfort and quality of life. Early detection allows intervention before significant joint damage accumulates, though this requires vigilance since rabbits instinctively hide pain. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in exotic animal medicine can develop an individualized management plan. With proper care, many arthritic rabbits maintain good quality of life well into their senior years, continuing to enjoy interaction with their owners and engaging in modified normal behaviors.
