Infectious arthritis, also known as septic arthritis, is a serious joint condition in rabbits caused by bacterial invasion of the joint space, resulting in inflammation, pain, and potential permanent joint damage. This condition occurs when pathogenic bacteria enter a joint either through direct penetration from wounds or bites, spread through the bloodstream from infections elsewhere in the body, or extension from adjacent infected tissues. Unlike degenerative arthritis which develops gradually, infectious arthritis typically presents acutely with sudden onset of severe lameness, joint swelling, and systemic illness. The condition requires prompt veterinary attention because delayed treatment can result in irreversible joint destruction and potentially life-threatening systemic infection.
The development of infectious arthritis begins when bacteria colonize the synovial membrane, the tissue lining the joint capsule that produces lubricating synovial fluid. Once established within the joint, bacteria trigger an intense inflammatory response as the immune system attempts to combat the infection. This inflammatory reaction, while necessary to fight infection, also damages the delicate joint structures. Enzymes released by both bacteria and inflammatory cells degrade cartilage, and pus accumulating within the joint space creates pressure that further damages tissues. Without treatment, the infection can destroy articular cartilage within days, leading to permanent loss of joint function even if the infection is eventually cleared.
Infectious arthritis significantly impacts rabbit health due to the severe pain it causes and its potential to become life-threatening if bacteria spread systemically. Affected rabbits typically experience intense discomfort that prevents normal activities including eating, grooming, and moving around their environment. The stress and pain frequently trigger secondary gastrointestinal stasis, adding a potentially fatal complication to an already serious condition. Because rabbits instinctively hide illness, the severity of infection may not be immediately apparent, and by the time obvious symptoms develop, significant joint damage may have already occurred. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are essential for the best possible outcome.
With prompt diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic therapy, many rabbits with infectious arthritis can recover, though the prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment begins and which joint is affected. Treatment requires rabbit-safe antibiotics administered for extended periods, often combined with pain management and supportive care. Some cases require surgical drainage or joint lavage to remove infected material. Even with successful treatment, some degree of permanent joint damage and chronic discomfort may persist. Prevention focuses on prompt treatment of wounds, maintaining good hygiene, and addressing any other infections before they can spread to joints.
