Salpingitis is an inflammatory condition of the oviduct in poultry, most commonly affecting laying hens, caused primarily by bacterial infection of the reproductive tract. The oviduct is the tubular structure through which eggs pass during formation, and infection of this organ disrupts normal egg production and can lead to serious health complications. When bacteria colonize the oviduct, they trigger an inflammatory response that results in thickening of the oviductal walls, accumulation of caseous or purulent material within the lumen, and progressive damage to the reproductive tract tissues.
Salpingitis is one of the most common reproductive disorders affecting laying hens worldwide and represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in both commercial and backyard flocks. The condition affects poultry of all breeds and production systems, though incidence may vary with management practices, biosecurity measures, and endemic disease pressure. In commercial layer operations, salpingitis is a leading cause of decreased production and increased mortality, with significant economic impact. The condition occurs most frequently in mature laying hens but can affect birds of any age that have reached sexual maturity.
The economic and welfare impact of salpingitis extends across multiple dimensions of poultry production. Affected hens experience pain and discomfort from the inflammatory process, decreased quality of life, and often progressive deterioration if untreated. Egg production declines or ceases entirely as the damaged oviduct can no longer support normal egg formation. Eggs that are produced may be abnormal in appearance, with shell defects, irregular shapes, or internal quality problems. Secondary complications including egg peritonitis, septicemia, and chronic debilitation frequently develop in untreated cases.
Early detection and appropriate treatment are essential for successful management of salpingitis. When diagnosed before extensive oviductal damage has occurred, antibiotic therapy may successfully resolve the infection and allow partial recovery of reproductive function. However, chronic cases with significant tissue damage may not respond to treatment, and permanent loss of egg production is common. Prevention through good management practices, biosecurity, and control of predisposing factors is preferable to treatment of established disease. Understanding the causes, recognition of clinical signs, and implementation of appropriate management strategies are essential for controlling salpingitis in laying flocks.
