Egg peritonitis, also known as egg yolk peritonitis or EYP, is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects laying hens when yolk material is deposited into the abdominal cavity instead of traveling through the normal reproductive tract. This condition occurs when the infundibulum, the funnel-shaped structure that captures the ovulated yolk, fails to properly receive the yolk as it is released from the ovary. The free yolk material in the coelomic cavity triggers an inflammatory response and often becomes contaminated with bacteria, leading to peritonitis and systemic illness.
Egg peritonitis affects domestic poultry species worldwide, with laying hens being the most commonly affected due to their intensive egg production. The condition is particularly prevalent in commercial layer operations where hens are bred for maximum egg output, as well as in backyard flocks where older hens continue laying beyond their prime production years. Studies indicate that egg peritonitis accounts for a significant percentage of mortality in mature laying hens, with some estimates suggesting it may be responsible for up to twenty percent of deaths in layer flocks.
The economic and welfare impact of egg peritonitis is substantial for both commercial producers and backyard poultry keepers. In commercial operations, affected birds experience decreased production, increased mortality, and may require culling, all of which contribute to financial losses. From a welfare perspective, egg peritonitis causes significant discomfort and suffering, as affected hens experience abdominal distension, pain, and progressive systemic illness.
