Tropical keratopathy is a degenerative corneal condition in dogs that is closely associated with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, high ambient temperatures, and the environmental conditions characteristic of tropical and subtropical climates. The disease involves progressive changes to the corneal stroma and epithelium, leading to opacity, mineral and lipid deposition, and gradual visual impairment if left untreated.
The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped structure forming the front surface of the eye. It serves as both a protective barrier and the primary refractive surface responsible for focusing light onto the retina. Maintaining corneal transparency requires a precise arrangement of collagen fibers within the stroma, appropriate hydration levels, and a healthy endothelial and epithelial cell population. Tropical keratopathy disrupts these carefully balanced conditions, leading to structural and biochemical changes that compromise transparency.
The condition has been documented with increasing frequency in veterinary ophthalmology literature as awareness of climate-associated ocular disease has grown. While historically underrecognized, improved diagnostic techniques and greater attention to environmental factors in disease etiology have led to better identification and characterization of tropical keratopathy. The condition shares features with band keratopathy and corneal lipid dystrophy but is distinguished by its strong association with climatic and environmental factors.
Tropical keratopathy typically develops gradually over months to years, and many affected dogs are not presented for veterinary evaluation until the corneal changes have become visually apparent to the owner. Early detection through routine ophthalmic examination allows for earlier intervention, which can slow disease progression and preserve vision for a longer period.
