Rectal polyps are abnormal tissue growths that arise from the mucosal lining of the rectum in dogs. These growths project into the rectal lumen and may be attached by a stalk (pedunculated) or have a broad base (sessile). While relatively uncommon compared to some other gastrointestinal conditions, rectal polyps represent an important diagnosis because they can cause significant clinical signs and some types have the potential for malignant transformation. Understanding this condition helps owners recognize concerning symptoms and seek appropriate veterinary care.
Rectal polyps develop when the normal cellular turnover of the rectal lining becomes dysregulated, leading to excessive growth of mucosal tissue. The exact cause of this dysregulation is not fully understood, but chronic inflammation, genetic factors, and age-related changes are thought to contribute. Polyps can vary significantly in size, from tiny growths only a few millimeters in diameter to large masses several centimeters across. Most rectal polyps in dogs are benign adenomatous polyps, but malignant transformation can occur, particularly in large or long-standing polyps.
The impact of rectal polyps on a dog's health depends largely on the size, location, and type of polyp present. Small polyps may cause no symptoms at all and are sometimes discovered incidentally during rectal examination for other reasons. Larger polyps commonly cause bleeding, visible blood on stool surfaces, straining during defecation, and changes in stool shape or consistency. In severe cases, large polyps may prolapse through the anus during defecation, appearing as a visible mass. The presence of blood in stool is often the first sign that prompts owners to seek veterinary attention.
Rectal polyps are treatable, typically through surgical removal, and most dogs have excellent outcomes when the condition is addressed appropriately. Early detection and removal are preferred because smaller polyps are easier to excise completely and carry lower risk of malignancy. Histopathological examination of removed polyps is essential to determine the tissue type and assess for any malignant changes. Dogs with benign polyps that are completely removed generally have excellent prognoses, though monitoring for recurrence or new polyp development is recommended. Veterinary evaluation is essential for any dog showing signs of rectal bleeding or straining during defecation.
