Pulmonary carcinoma refers to primary malignant tumors that originate within the lung tissue of dogs, arising from the epithelial cells lining the airways or alveoli. This form of cancer represents the most common type of primary lung tumor in canines, though primary lung tumors overall are relatively uncommon compared to metastatic lung disease. Pulmonary carcinoma typically affects older dogs, with the average age at diagnosis being approximately ten to eleven years. The condition can significantly impact respiratory function and quality of life, making early detection and appropriate treatment essential for optimal outcomes.
The development of pulmonary carcinoma involves the malignant transformation of cells within the lung parenchyma, bronchi, or bronchioles. These tumors arise when normal lung cells accumulate genetic mutations that lead to uncontrolled proliferation and loss of normal growth regulation. Primary lung carcinomas in dogs are most commonly adenocarcinomas, arising from the glandular cells of the respiratory tract, though other histologic types including squamous cell carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma also occur. The tumors typically grow as solitary masses within one lung lobe, though multiple tumors or diffuse patterns may occasionally be observed.
Pulmonary carcinoma significantly impacts a dog's respiratory capacity and overall health as the tumor grows and potentially spreads. Early-stage tumors may cause no clinical signs, with many cases discovered incidentally during imaging performed for other reasons. As tumors enlarge, they may compress or obstruct airways, leading to coughing, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance. Advanced disease can result in pleural effusion, metastatic spread to other organs, and progressive respiratory compromise. The insidious nature of early disease means many cases are not diagnosed until tumors have reached considerable size.
Treatment outcomes for pulmonary carcinoma depend heavily on the stage at diagnosis and the tumor's characteristics. Surgical removal of the affected lung lobe offers the best chance for cure when tumors are localized and have not spread to lymph nodes or other organs. Dogs with small, well-differentiated tumors that are completely excised may survive for extended periods. However, tumors that have spread at the time of diagnosis carry a more guarded prognosis.
