Collapsing trachea is a progressive respiratory condition in which the cartilage rings that normally hold the trachea open become weakened and flatten during breathing. This structural collapse of the windpipe restricts airflow and produces the characteristic honking cough that brings many affected dogs to veterinary attention. Collapsing trachea predominantly affects toy and small breed dogs, with Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and Toy Poodles among the most commonly diagnosed breeds. The condition can significantly impact quality of life, though most affected dogs can be managed successfully with appropriate medical treatment and lifestyle modifications.
The underlying problem in collapsing trachea involves degeneration of the tracheal cartilage rings that normally maintain the airway's tubular shape. Healthy tracheal cartilage forms C-shaped rings connected by a flexible membrane on the dorsal surface. In affected dogs, these cartilage rings lose their rigidity and flatten when air pressure changes during breathing. During inspiration, the cervical trachea may collapse as negative pressure pulls the weakened walls inward. During expiration, increased thoracic pressure can collapse the intrathoracic portion of the trachea. This collapse restricts airflow and triggers the coughing and respiratory distress characteristic of the condition.
Collapsing trachea impacts affected dogs through episodes of coughing, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance that may range from occasional mild symptoms to frequent severe respiratory distress. The distinctive goose-honk cough often occurs during excitement, physical activity, eating, drinking, or when pressure is applied to the neck. Many dogs experience worsening symptoms during hot or humid weather. While some dogs maintain good quality of life with mild symptoms, others experience significant disability from severe tracheal collapse requiring intensive medical management or surgical intervention.
Treatment for collapsing trachea typically begins with medical management including cough suppressants, bronchodilators, and weight management. Environmental modifications to reduce triggers play an important role in symptom control. Dogs that fail to respond adequately to medical therapy may be candidates for surgical placement of tracheal stents or external prosthetic rings to support the collapsed airway. Working closely with veterinarians experienced in respiratory disease allows development of individualized management plans that optimize quality of life for affected dogs.
