Unlike prostate cancer in humans, canine prostatic carcinoma is relatively uncommon but highly aggressive when it does occur, representing approximately one percent of all canine cancers. This devastating disease affects older male dogs regardless of their neutering status, which distinguishes it from benign prostatic hyperplasia that primarily affects intact males. Prostatic carcinoma significantly impacts affected dogs' quality of life as the tumor grows and spreads. The prostate gland's location at the base of the bladder means that tumor growth often interferes with both urinary and bowel function. Dogs may experience difficulty urinating, painful defecation, and progressive weakness in the hind limbs as the cancer invades surrounding structures. The aggressive nature of this cancer means it frequently metastasizes to regional lymph nodes, lungs, and bones, causing additional complications and discomfort.
Treatment options for prostatic carcinoma remain limited compared to many other canine cancers, and the prognosis is generally guarded to poor. Early detection offers the best opportunity for meaningful intervention, though the cancer is often advanced by the time symptoms prompt veterinary evaluation. Treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and maintaining quality of life rather than achieving a cure. Pet owners should work closely with veterinary oncologists to understand all available options, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and palliative care approaches that prioritize comfort during the dog's remaining time.
