Marijuana toxicity in dogs occurs when canines ingest cannabis products containing tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana. As cannabis has become increasingly legal and available in many regions, veterinary cases of marijuana toxicity in dogs have risen significantly. Dogs may encounter marijuana through various sources including the plant itself, dried flower, edibles, concentrates, or secondhand smoke exposure. The effects on dogs can range from mild disorientation to severe neurological depression requiring intensive supportive care.
The endocannabinoid system exists in dogs as it does in humans, which is why THC produces effects in canines. However, dogs appear to have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains than humans, making them more sensitive to the effects of THC. Additionally, dogs cannot metabolize THC as efficiently as humans, resulting in longer-lasting and more intense effects from equivalent doses. What might produce mild effects in a human can cause significant toxicity in a dog, particularly a smaller dog receiving a higher relative dose.
Marijuana toxicity typically presents with a characteristic constellation of neurological symptoms including ataxia, disorientation, dilated pupils, and altered responsiveness. Affected dogs may appear drunk or sedated, have difficulty walking, and show exaggerated responses to stimuli. Urinary incontinence is common. In more severe cases, dogs may become profoundly depressed, hypothermic, or experience seizures. The onset of symptoms usually occurs within thirty minutes to several hours after ingestion, depending on the route of exposure and whether food was in the stomach.
While marijuana toxicity can appear alarming, most dogs recover fully with appropriate supportive care. Fatal outcomes are rare with marijuana exposure alone but can occur, particularly when very potent products are ingested or when marijuana is combined with other toxic substances such as chocolate in edibles. Honest communication with veterinary staff about the nature of the exposure allows for optimal treatment, and veterinarians are focused on helping the patient rather than passing judgment on the circumstances of the exposure.
