Hair cysts, clinically referred to as follicular cysts, are benign, non-cancerous growths that arise from the hair follicle structures within a dog's skin. These cysts form when the normal turnover and shedding process of the hair follicle becomes disrupted, causing a pocket to develop beneath the skin surface. Over time, this pocket fills with keratin, a fibrous structural protein that is the primary component of hair and the outer layer of skin, creating a firm or semi-firm lump that can usually be felt through the skin.
Follicular cysts are among the most common benign skin growths encountered in veterinary dermatology. They can occur anywhere on the body where hair follicles are present, though they tend to appear most frequently on the trunk, head, neck, and upper limbs. In most cases, the cysts are solitary, but some dogs develop multiple cysts simultaneously or recurrently over time, a condition sometimes described as generalized follicular cystic disease.
These cysts are classified into several subtypes depending on which portion of the hair follicle is involved in their formation. Infundibular cysts arise from the upper portion of the follicle, isthmus cysts from the middle segment, and matrical cysts from the deepest part where the hair bulb resides. Hybrid cysts involving more than one segment can also occur. Despite the different subtypes, the clinical presentation and management approach are broadly similar across all types.
Although hair cysts are benign and generally pose no serious health threat, they can occasionally become problematic if they rupture beneath the skin. A ruptured cyst releases its keratin contents into surrounding tissue, which the immune system treats as foreign material. This triggers an intense localized inflammatory response known as a foreign body reaction, resulting in redness, swelling, pain, and sometimes secondary bacterial infection that requires veterinary attention.
