Mast cell tumors may co-occur with other conditions that share common risk factors or represent coincidental findings in the affected patient population. Other skin tumors including lipomas, sebaceous tumors, and histiocytomas are common in the same middle-aged to older dog population that develops mast cell tumors and may be found simultaneously. Allergic skin disease including atopy and food allergies is prevalent in some breeds predisposed to mast cell tumors, and chronic inflammation may theoretically influence tumor development. Dogs diagnosed with one mast cell tumor have elevated risk for developing additional mast cell tumors, which may represent new primary tumors rather than spread from the original cancer. Systemic mastocytosis, a condition involving mast cell infiltration of internal organs, can occur in association with cutaneous mast cell tumors.

Several conditions may present with symptoms or appearances similar to mast cell tumors and must be differentiated through appropriate diagnostic testing. Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that are very common in dogs and may be difficult to distinguish from mast cell tumors on palpation alone. Histiocytomas are benign tumors that typically occur in young dogs and may regress spontaneously. Other skin cancers including melanomas, soft tissue sarcomas, and cutaneous lymphoma can appear similar to mast cell tumors. Insect bite reactions, hives, and other inflammatory conditions may mimic the fluctuating appearance of mast cell tumors. Fine needle aspiration readily differentiates mast cell tumors from these other conditions.

Potential complications of mast cell tumors arise from both local tumor effects and systemic consequences of histamine release. Local complications include tumor ulceration with secondary bacterial infection, chronic bleeding, and pain or discomfort from growing masses. Gastrointestinal ulceration from chronic histamine-stimulated acid secretion can cause vomiting, appetite loss, and potentially life-threatening bleeding. Anaphylactic reactions during tumor degranulation represent the most severe systemic complication. Metastasis to regional lymph nodes, spleen, and liver occurs with aggressive tumors and indicates advanced disease requiring modified treatment approaches. Wound healing complications may occur if surgery is performed without adequate preoperative antihistamine therapy. Recognition of these potential complications guides appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic management.
