High-grade mast cell tumors, in contrast, are aggressive cancers that frequently spread to lymph nodes and internal organs and carry a much more guarded prognosis. This wide spectrum of behavior makes accurate grading and staging essential for determining the most appropriate treatment approach and providing realistic expectations for outcomes.
Treatment for mast cell tumors has advanced significantly in recent years with improved understanding of tumor biology and the development of targeted therapies. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment for most mast cell tumors and can be curative for many low-grade and even some intermediate-grade tumors when complete removal is achieved. For tumors that cannot be completely excised or those at high risk for spread, additional treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted medications that block c-KIT may be recommended. The availability of multiple treatment options allows veterinary oncologists to develop individualized treatment plans that account for tumor characteristics, the dog's overall health, and owner preferences and resources.
