Cheyletiella infestation, commonly known as walking dandruff, is a highly contagious skin condition in dogs caused by mites of the genus Cheyletiella. The primary species affecting dogs is Cheyletiella yasguri, though dogs can occasionally be infested by species that typically prefer other hosts, such as Cheyletiella blakei from cats or Cheyletiella parasitovorax from rabbits. The name walking dandruff derives from the distinctive appearance of the infestation, where large flakes of skin debris appear to move when observed closely due to the mites crawling beneath them. This condition is particularly common in puppies and dogs from crowded environments such as shelters, pet stores, and breeding facilities.
Cheyletiella mites are relatively large surface-dwelling parasites that live in the keratin layer of the skin and feed on tissue fluids and debris. Unlike some other mites, they do not burrow into the skin but remain on the surface, where they cause irritation and trigger excessive skin scaling. The mites complete their entire life cycle on the host, with eggs attached to hairs and development progressing through larval and nymph stages over approximately three weeks. While they prefer to remain on their host, Cheyletiella mites can survive off the host in the environment for up to ten days under favorable conditions.
The clinical impact of cheyletiellosis is generally less severe than many other skin conditions, with most affected dogs experiencing moderate itching and characteristic scaling along the back. However, some dogs develop more intense reactions with significant discomfort, hair loss, and skin inflammation. The highly contagious nature of these mites makes them a concern in multi-pet households and facilities, and their ability to temporarily infest humans adds another dimension to the importance of prompt treatment.
Cheyletiella infestations are readily treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications, and most dogs recover completely with proper therapy. Environmental treatment is an important component of management to prevent reinfestation from mites surviving off the host. Early recognition and treatment, combined with addressing all potentially exposed animals and the environment, leads to successful resolution in the vast majority of cases.
