Feline asthma, while a distinct condition, may present with similar coughing and respiratory symptoms and can occur concurrently with infectious respiratory disease.

Several conditions present with symptoms that overlap with tracheitis, making accurate diagnosis important for appropriate treatment. Feline asthma causes coughing and respiratory distress due to airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction, and may be mistaken for tracheitis. The key distinction is that asthma involves the lower airways and is typically an allergic or hypersensitivity response rather than an infection. Laryngeal disease, including laryngitis and laryngeal paralysis, can cause coughing and voice changes but involves the larynx rather than the trachea. Cardiac disease, particularly conditions leading to heart failure, can cause coughing and respiratory distress, and must be ruled out through cardiac evaluation. Tracheal foreign bodies and tumors are less common but important differential diagnoses that require specific treatment.

Complications of tracheitis can develop if the condition is severe, chronic, or inadequately treated. Extension of infection or inflammation to the lower respiratory tract can result in bronchitis or bronchopneumonia, which are more serious conditions requiring more intensive treatment. Chronic tracheal inflammation may lead to permanent changes in the tracheal structure, including scarring or stricture formation, which can cause ongoing respiratory symptoms. Secondary bacterial infections may develop, particularly if the initial cause was viral and the damaged respiratory epithelium becomes colonized with bacteria. Respiratory failure, while rare, can occur in severe cases with significant airway obstruction or overwhelming infection. Prompt recognition and treatment of tracheitis helps prevent these complications and ensures the best possible outcome for affected cats.
