The larynx, commonly known as the voice box, serves critical functions including protecting the airway during swallowing and allowing air to flow freely during breathing. When the nerves supplying the laryngeal muscles become damaged or degenerate, the cartilages that normally open wide during breathing remain in a partially closed position, creating an obstruction to airflow that can range from mild to life-threatening.
This condition develops when the recurrent laryngeal nerves, which control the muscles responsible for opening the larynx, become dysfunctional. These nerves follow a lengthy path from the brain, down through the neck and chest, and back up to the larynx, making them vulnerable to damage from various causes. In cats, laryngeal paralysis can occur as an isolated condition or as part of a more generalized polyneuropathy affecting multiple nerves throughout the body.
Cats with laryngeal paralysis typically experience progressive breathing difficulties that may worsen during exercise, excitement, or hot weather. The condition can significantly impact a cat's quality of life by limiting activity tolerance and causing distressing respiratory symptoms. In severe cases or during respiratory crises, laryngeal paralysis can become a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Owners may first notice changes in their cat's meow or breathing sounds before more obvious respiratory distress develops.
With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, many cats with laryngeal paralysis can achieve significant improvement in their breathing and quality of life.
