Supraventricular tachycardia, commonly abbreviated as SVT, is a category of abnormally rapid heart rhythms that originate above the ventricles in the atria or atrioventricular junction of a cat's heart. This arrhythmia is characterized by heart rates that exceed normal physiological limits and occur suddenly without appropriate physiological triggers such as exercise or stress. SVT encompasses several specific arrhythmia types including atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia, and accessory pathway-mediated tachycardias. While less common than some other cardiac arrhythmias in cats, SVT can cause significant clinical symptoms and may indicate underlying cardiac disease requiring comprehensive evaluation.
The development of SVT involves abnormal electrical activity in the upper chambers of the heart or the conduction pathways connecting the atria to the ventricles. Unlike normal heart rhythm where the sinoatrial node initiates each beat at an appropriate rate, SVT occurs when abnormal electrical circuits or ectopic foci generate rapid impulses that override normal pacemaker function. These rapid rhythms may be sustained, lasting minutes to hours, or may occur in brief paroxysms that start and stop suddenly. The heart rates achieved during SVT episodes often exceed 300 beats per minute in cats, far above the normal resting rate of 120 to 200 beats per minute.
The clinical significance of SVT in cats depends on the ventricular rate achieved, episode duration, frequency of recurrence, and underlying cardiac health. Brief episodes of SVT in cats with otherwise normal hearts may cause minimal symptoms and may resolve spontaneously. However, prolonged or frequently recurring SVT compromises cardiac function by reducing the time available for ventricular filling between beats, decreasing cardiac output. Cats with underlying heart disease are particularly vulnerable to hemodynamic compromise during SVT episodes. Sustained rapid rates can lead to tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy, where the persistent fast heart rate itself causes progressive cardiac dysfunction.
Treatment for SVT in cats focuses on controlling ventricular rate during episodes, preventing recurrence, and addressing any underlying cardiac disease. Various medications can slow conduction through the atrioventricular node or suppress ectopic atrial activity. Acute episodes may require emergency intervention including vagal maneuvers or cardioversion. Long-term management involves daily oral medications selected based on individual patient response and tolerance.
