Atopic dermatitis caused by environmental allergen sensitivities frequently occurs alongside food allergy, as cats with allergic tendencies often react to multiple allergen types. Flea allergy dermatitis may coexist with food allergy, creating combined sources of pruritus that must all be addressed for symptom control. The eosinophilic granuloma complex, including indolent ulcers, eosinophilic plaques, and linear granulomas, can occur as manifestations of underlying food allergy. Environmental allergies can cause identical skin lesions and typically require intradermal or serum allergy testing for identification. Intestinal parasites can cause gastrointestinal symptoms similar to food allergy. Inflammatory bowel disease produces chronic digestive signs that may overlap with food hypersensitivity. Cutaneous adverse food reactions that are non-immunological, representing food intolerance rather than true allergy, may respond similarly to dietary changes. Dermatophytosis and ectoparasites can cause inflammatory skin lesions. Accurate differentiation guides appropriate treatment selection.

Complications can develop when food allergy is inadequately controlled or left untreated. Secondary bacterial skin infections occur commonly as traumatized skin from scratching allows bacterial colonization. Yeast overgrowth may develop in chronically inflamed skin, particularly in ear canals and skin folds. Chronic self-trauma leads to permanent skin changes including scarring, thickening, and hyperpigmentation. Significant hair loss may occur, with incomplete regrowth possible in severely affected areas. Chronic gastrointestinal inflammation may lead to protein-losing enteropathy, malnutrition, or weight loss in severe cases. The development of additional allergies over time complicates management and may require dietary modifications. Early diagnosis and strict dietary management help prevent these complications and maintain optimal health and quality of life.
