This highly contagious virus spreads rapidly through cat populations, particularly in multi-cat environments such as shelters, catteries, and households with multiple cats. The disease affects cats of all ages but causes the most severe illness in young kittens and immunocompromised individuals. FHV-1 infection is virtually ubiquitous in cat populations, with the majority of cats having been exposed to the virus at some point in their lives.
Feline herpesvirus-1 belongs to the alphaherpesvirus family and shares characteristics with other herpesviruses that make it particularly challenging to manage. Like other herpesviruses, FHV-1 establishes lifelong latent infection in nerve tissue following acute disease, with the virus remaining dormant until reactivated by stress or immunosuppression. When reactivated, the virus travels back along nerve pathways to cause recurrent disease episodes. This cycle of latency and reactivation means that infected cats may experience recurring respiratory and ocular symptoms throughout their lives, particularly during times of stress.
The impact of feline herpesvirus infection ranges from mild, self-limiting upper respiratory symptoms to severe, life-threatening disease in vulnerable populations. Typical manifestations include sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, and fever, which may resolve within one to three weeks with appropriate supportive care. However, young kittens, particularly those without maternal antibodies, can develop severe systemic disease with high mortality rates. Ocular complications including corneal ulcers and chronic keratitis can lead to permanent vision impairment. Chronic carriers may suffer from recurring episodes that diminish quality of life.
Despite the challenges posed by latent infection and potential for recurrence, feline herpesvirus is manageable with appropriate veterinary care and environmental management. Vaccination provides significant protection against severe disease, though it does not completely prevent infection or establishment of latent carrier status. Antiviral medications can help reduce the severity and duration of acute episodes, while supportive care addresses symptoms and prevents secondary bacterial infections. Understanding the nature of herpesvirus infection helps cat owners implement strategies to minimize stress-induced flare-ups and maintain quality of life for affected cats.
