Feline upper respiratory infection complex, commonly referred to as URI or cat flu, is one of the most prevalent infectious disease syndromes affecting domestic cats worldwide. This condition encompasses infections caused by multiple viral and bacterial pathogens that target the upper respiratory tract, including the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, and sometimes the eyes. Feline URI is extremely common in environments where cats congregate, particularly animal shelters, catteries, and multicat households, where transmission occurs rapidly through respiratory secretions. The condition affects cats of all ages but is especially concerning in kittens, elderly cats, and immunocompromised individuals who may develop severe or life-threatening illness.
The URI complex is caused by several different pathogens, with feline herpesvirus-1 and feline calicivirus being responsible for approximately eighty to ninety percent of cases. These viruses attack the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and eyes, causing inflammation, tissue damage, and characteristic clinical signs. Secondary bacterial infections commonly complicate viral infections, adding to symptom severity. Other organisms including Chlamydophila felis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Mycoplasma species can also cause or contribute to upper respiratory disease. The synergistic effects of multiple pathogens often result in more severe clinical presentations than single-organism infections would produce alone.
The impact of URI on affected cats ranges from mild cold-like symptoms to severe, debilitating disease that can prove fatal without intervention. Common manifestations include sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, fever, lethargy, and decreased appetite. More severe cases may involve oral ulceration, pneumonia, and dangerous dehydration from inability to eat or drink. Young kittens face particular danger because their immune systems are immature and they have limited reserves to weather extended illness. Even after recovery from acute infection, many cats become chronic carriers of herpesvirus, which can reactivate during stress and cause recurrent symptoms throughout life.
Despite its prevalence and potential severity, feline URI is generally treatable with appropriate supportive care and veterinary management. Most immunocompetent adult cats recover within two to three weeks, though some may experience prolonged or recurrent symptoms. Prevention through vaccination remains the cornerstone of population health management, though vaccines do not provide complete protection. Early recognition and treatment significantly improve outcomes, particularly for vulnerable individuals. Understanding this common condition helps cat owners provide appropriate care and take steps to protect their feline companions from infection and its complications.
