Purebred cats of various breeds have also been diagnosed with paraneoplastic alopecia, with no single breed appearing to be at notably higher risk. Age appears to be a more significant risk factor than breed, with middle-aged to older cats being most commonly affected.

While specific breed risks for paraneoplastic alopecia are not established, some breeds may have increased susceptibility to certain types of cancer generally. Siamese cats have been reported to have higher rates of certain cancers, including some gastrointestinal malignancies, which could theoretically increase their risk for paraneoplastic syndromes. Persian and Himalayan cats may have increased rates of certain types of tumors. However, these associations are not specifically linked to the pancreatic and hepatobiliary carcinomas most commonly associated with paraneoplastic alopecia. Mixed breed cats are just as likely to develop the causative tumors as purebred cats, emphasizing that this condition can affect any cat.

Screening recommendations for feline paraneoplastic alopecia focus on vigilance in middle-aged and older cats rather than breed-specific testing. All cats over the age of seven should receive comprehensive wellness examinations at least annually, with twice-yearly examinations recommended for cats over ten years of age. Blood work including liver enzyme evaluation may help detect hepatobiliary abnormalities early. Abdominal palpation during routine examinations can sometimes detect masses before clinical signs develop. Owners should be educated about the warning signs of internal cancer, including unexplained weight loss, appetite changes, and vomiting. There are currently no genetic tests available to identify cats at risk for the cancers that cause paraneoplastic alopecia. Diabetes mellitus can occur if the tumor affects the insulin-producing portions of the pancreas. Hepatic dysfunction with associated liver enzyme elevations and potentially jaundice may be present, particularly with hepatobiliary tumors. Cancer cachexia, a wasting syndrome associated with malignancy, often accompanies paraneoplastic alopecia and contributes to progressive weight loss and muscle wasting. Anemia, whether from chronic disease, blood loss, or bone marrow effects, is commonly seen in cats with internal cancers.

Conditions with similar symptoms that must be differentiated from feline paraneoplastic alopecia include various other causes of alopecia in cats. Dermatophytosis produces patchy hair loss but typically lacks the shiny, smooth skin characteristic of paraneoplastic alopecia. Feline symmetric alopecia or feline psychogenic alopecia causes hair loss from overgrooming, but the skin usually appears normal rather than glistening.
