The condition develops when a significant proportion of hair follicles simultaneously enter the telogen phase prematurely due to metabolic stress, illness, hormonal changes, or other physiological disruptions. Under normal circumstances, cat hair follicles cycle through growth phases independently, ensuring a consistent coat density. However, when a major stressor affects the body, it can cause a large percentage of follicles to synchronize their cycles, leading to mass shedding approximately two to three months after the triggering event. Common causes include severe illness, high fever, surgery, pregnancy, lactation, nutritional deficiencies, and significant emotional stress.
Telogen effluvium affects cats of all ages, breeds, and backgrounds, though it is more commonly recognized in cats that have recently experienced a notable health event or life change. The hair loss associated with this condition does not cause itching, inflammation, or skin damage, which helps distinguish it from other dermatological conditions. Cats with telogen effluvium maintain healthy skin underneath the thinning coat, and the hair loss pattern is typically symmetrical and diffuse rather than localized to specific areas.
The prognosis for cats with telogen effluvium is generally excellent, as hair regrowth typically begins once the underlying cause has been resolved and the cat's body returns to a state of physiological balance. Most cats experience complete coat recovery within three to six months, though the timeline can vary depending on the severity of the initial trigger and the cat's overall health status.
