As the right ventricle fails to adequately pump blood forward, pressure builds in the systemic venous system. This increased venous pressure causes fluid to leak out of blood vessels into surrounding tissues and body cavities. In birds, ascites with fluid accumulation in the coelomic cavity is a hallmark sign of right heart failure. The liver becomes congested and enlarged, potentially leading to secondary hepatic dysfunction. Overall metabolic function declines as tissues receive inadequate oxygen and nutrient delivery, resulting in weakness, exercise intolerance, and declining quality of life.
