Aspergillosis is a devastating fungal infection that poses one of the most significant health threats to raptors in both captive and wild populations. This disease is caused by fungi of the genus Aspergillus, with Aspergillus fumigatus being the most commonly implicated species in birds of prey. The infection primarily affects the respiratory system, including the lungs, air sacs, and syrinx (voice box), though systemic spread to other organs can occur in advanced cases. Aspergillosis is considered the most important fungal disease affecting captive raptors and represents a leading cause of death in rehabilitation centers and falconry operations worldwide.
The causative organism, Aspergillus fumigatus, is a ubiquitous mold found in soil, decaying organic matter, and contaminated grain or hay. Raptors become infected by inhaling fungal spores (conidia) that germinate and establish infection within the respiratory tract. Unlike bacterial or viral infections, aspergillosis is not contagious between birds; each case results from environmental exposure. The fungus thrives in the unique avian respiratory system, which includes extensive air sacs that provide an ideal warm, moist environment for fungal growth. Certain raptor species, particularly those from arctic or cold climates such as Gyrfalcons and Snowy Owls, appear especially susceptible to infection.
The impact of aspergillosis on raptor health is profound and often devastating. The fungus causes granulomatous lesions (aspergillomas) that progressively destroy lung and air sac tissue, leading to respiratory compromise, exercise intolerance, and eventually respiratory failure. The infection triggers a severe inflammatory response that further damages respiratory tissues. In systemic cases, fungal granulomas may develop in the kidneys, liver, brain, and other organs. Without treatment, aspergillosis is almost invariably fatal. Even with aggressive therapy, mortality rates remain high, and the disease carries a guarded to poor prognosis in many cases.
Treatment of aspergillosis requires prolonged antifungal therapy typically lasting weeks to months, combined with supportive care and correction of underlying predisposing factors. The disease is much easier to prevent than to treat, making attention to environmental management, stress reduction, and immune support critical for raptor health. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, but diagnosis can be challenging as early symptoms are often subtle and nonspecific. Working with a veterinarian experienced in raptor medicine is essential for both prevention and treatment of this serious condition.
